Hey guys,
Do you think it would be worth it for me to upgrade from a quad core machine to an octal for $70 a month?
Also, while Im typing.... I currently run a quad core machine with about 7 servers running. Should I be setting cpu affinity for each server so it stays on one core? or is it okay to let the os handle all of that? I am currently using no affinity at all.
Cheers,

I take it gigenet is your provider. If it is, you seem to have misunderstood, the Clovertown E5335 is not octal. Infact im not sure I know of any octal processors.

I didn't misunderstand, the 'machine' would be an octal core (total cores). I'm aware that they aren't on the same 'physical' cpu. That is why my initial post says octal machine, not octal cpu.
However, you are correct about the provider and the machine. It is a dual quad core, I currently have a dual dual core machine with them.
I guess Im trying to figure out if I should pay for the upgrade, or pay some more for a second machine..

It depends on what you want to do with it. if you only want 7 servers and it runs fine why upgrade? If you want more and just can't get it out of the 4 cores, then go ahead... Just be sure you are also upgrading ram and it has a good hard drive.
As for affinity, you should always set affinity when working with multi-core processors. If nothing else just to ensure that all processor's are equally utilized.

Ive been getting lag spikes at night when the servers are full so I am assuming I need to move forward with something else, right now I have;
1 x 24 slot 66 tick CSS
1 x 24 slot 66 tick CSS GunGame
1 x 28 slot 66 tick DODS
1 x 24 slot 66 tick TF2
2 x 12 slot 100 tick CSS
1 x 12 slot 100 tick DODS
When the public servers are full (the 66 tick servers), the machine seems to be okay. As soon as we try to have one or two of those 100 tick servers going too, we get lag spikes across all servers.
I know the spikes are being caused by spikes on the TF2 server, but I dont know how to resolve it without affecting the other servers.
I am currently NOT using affinity, I tried it once but I couldnt seem to get it set nicely.
Also, my server has 4GB of ram, but it never uses more then 1.5 of it, I have no clue why. It ends up with a massive pagefile and tons of unused physical memory....

The octal machine I see doesnt cost $70 more, thats why I suggested you misunderstood. It's $160 more, no?

You're right,
I guess my question is, is there enough value in the performance increase to justify the upgrade? also, can the octal handle what i listed above without problems... or, should my quad core with 4gb of ram be able to do it?
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh, so many questions lol.
srcds needs a 1-800 support hotline lol

Would you like to know what my Q6600, 4 GB ram box runs without probs?!
2 x 32 man DODS
1 x 30 man DODS
1 x 26 man DODS
1 x 32 man TF2
1 x 30 man TF2
1 x 24 man TF2
When all 7 servers are full, CPU usage hits between 40% and 60%. The box also uses 19mbit per second make sure your provider is ok with that, it's over 1GB ever 10 minutes

hmmm, so I should be good then eh? I dont know what is going on! See I thought my current set up should have been okay to do what I am trying to do.
Blik, if you monitor one of your full tf2 servers, do you see it spike at all? also, are u running an fps boosting program like srcdsfpsboot.exe? Also, do you have your servers set up using affinity so they only run on one specified core??
My box never seems to get past 8mbit per second right now as far as I can tell....

The app I use to launch the servs does trigger the windows media player timer. Occasionaly spikes, but nothing really to speak of.
Whats your CPU usage looking like?
When I have all 4 dods servers full, and TF2 not running, CPU usage is a comical 5%.
Are you sure your box has the bandwidth available to it?

Wow, that's unbelievable man! My 1 dods server uses about 12% when it's full...
Im pretty sure, I can contact someone at the company to double check though. Would a lack of bandwidth affect cpu usage though? I mean, even if the dods server is the only one running, its using 12% cpu aprox.

The cpu's are Xeon Woodcrest 5140, so I believe they each have 4MB.

Could it have something to do with all my servers running at 600 fps? if so, what should they be at?
I dont know how in the world blik is getting those types of numbers... it doesnt make sense to me at all.

The CPU on my server is a Core2Quad Q6600 it is different to the Xeon Woodcrest, however I'm unsure of the performance differences between the two.
Oh, and also to add a bit more to what the box is doing, hlstatsx tracking all 4 servers with the mysql db on the box
