Server runs awful on a gigabit lan

OK, so I have been setting up servers on for a lan party at my school. I am a student worker in charge of maintaining all of the computers in all of the computer labs on campus. So, I am getting paid to set these up and they need to work by Saturday(in less than two days). Well I had them all running fine on the network when we were testing them(I wasn't supposed to be running them over the network, but it was easier to test them that way). Well yesterday we had a big server test with a few computer lab workers. We unhooked it from the network and hooked it up to a brand new linksys 32+(i cant remember) port switch. As soon as we did this and started testing it went from almost instantly being able to connect to just staying on "sending client info" for about 3 minutes and finally goes into the server. When you finally get in the server runs horribly. The latency doesn't really show up that bad, higher than it should at times though. The problem happened when we unplugged it from the internet, which is what I think the problem is. We can't have it on the schools network for stupid reasons I would rather not go into.

Are there any settings that should be changed. It ran great before we unhooked it from the school network. Is there any quick fix.

Also the computer is a Lenovo ThinkCentre with the following:
Intel Pentium D 3.4 Ghz
4 gigs of DDR2
80 Gig Hitachi
Video card doesn't matter
It is running Server 2003 with a DHCP server and Apache

Also something else, I was running a UT2004 server while running a Quake 4 server and they were running flawlessly. So I don't think its the computer.

I'm not sure but your problem might be "sv_secure 1"
Because I think it has to connect to the steam servers for that.
Try setting it to 0.

I also run a college server (although mine is school sponsored). Do you guys have a website?

Tickrate? Start-up command line? Running srcdsfpsbooster?

Up these unless you are running 66 tick or less (but still, increase min/max rate to a decent value -anything from 20000 - 1000000 on a gigabit network).

You misquoted my name, its Elizle hahaha. Elizie makes me sound like a girl. I will try those and I am also trying a linux server because I had no problems with mine at home on a lan.

OK, I changed those settings and changed the tickrate to 100. It runs very smooth but it still takes a long time to get into the game. It pauses on Sending client info for about 2 minutes or so. Is there any way to fix that?

Somone at my LAN was complaining of this too. But for everyone else, the loads time's were fine - only stayed on sending client info for a few seconds at most.

Never did look into a fix (although i assume it would be client side).

I've had that problem on many computers... I think it's just a steam issue.
