Sudden Latency Spikes?
#1
Hello, I am running a Linux Fedora 7 Source server. 2.66 Ghz, 1 gb ram. When I get around 8 or more people on my server I get sudden latency spikes for everybody up around 600-800. I think it might be my internet connection but I am not sure.

This was using their Chicago location and I live in a chicago suburb.

Thanks in advance for any responses

Is it 100 Tick (im guessing by your signature, yes)? What is your CPU usage during these lag spikes. Does the spikes stay constantly or just for a second?

Yes it is 100 tick, I am not sure what my cpu usage is during it? Is there a way to check this in linux? The spikes are on for about 30 seconds until 2 or more people leave or we just all wait it out.

Thanks for your reply!

you can use the "top" command in a shell or just the "stats" command in console of the game itself.

If I use the top in the command that starts my server for example:

./srcds_run -console -game cstrike +map de_dust +maxplayers 16 -autoupdate -top

that will give me results?

and if I type in "stats" in the console while I'm on the server from a different computer it should give me the servers cpu usage?

dont add hop to the startup line.

start the server as normal in a screen session. then type hop and that will give you the cpu usage.

I prefer htop, but you would have to download that.

top is a linux command, nothing to do with srcds so open another terminal window and type top to see. if you do stats from another machine it will give the fps and cpu of that machine you have to do "rcon stats"

So should I just run rcon stats during a latency spike to see what is going on?

Yup. Just "rcon stats"

I would run top. CPU usage through rcon stats sometimes either doesn't work, or can be incorrect.

So this shouldn't be a problem with my bandwith?

On our box I have a bandwidth monitor. With our 100 tick 10 slot match server full it uses between .5 and .7mbps upload and a little over 1mbps download. I dunno 2mbps upload should be fine.

I guess the main thing to remeber is that your running a server off of your ISP so a number of things could cause this problem. Such as alot people on your street sucking up all the available bandwidth, and I mean these network arn't made to run servers. Thats what datacenters are for...

Some isp compainies cap your limit of bandwidth if you are using too much though.
