How do i specify a user to run my dedicated server as, cause i want to play on my own tf2 server so i would need 2 valid licences of the game. I would want to play on the account that i have already earned some achievements on, so how would i go about specifying the server run under a different steam account.

as far as I know running a dedicated server does not require a user id / password while using the hldsupdatetool.exe. try using that tool.. there is a bunch of install tutorials on this site.

well this was not actually for using the update tool, i was running the dedicated server and when i connected to the server to play on it, i saw that i was connected as the user that i wanted to run the server as (I didnt have all of my statistics) i wanted to know if there was a way to specify the user when you started up the server

are you talking about a listen server? one that you start from the gui? actually that can't be since we're in the linux section.

SRCDS doesn't require a user/password account to run a TF2 dedicated server nor does it cost anything. So why use 2 accounts?

Please be more specific.

As root,

#Create the user
adduser test
#login to the user called test
su test

install the server, then when you are going to run it use this command

screen -dmS test ./srcds_run ( the rest of the startup line )

this will run the server under the user test in the background.

I tried to only use the 1 account, but the thing is that i would liek to play on my own server. and when i was hosting it i connected to tf2 with my steam account on windows and tried to connect to my server and steam started crabbing at me the exact message it gave me was "can not connect because the steam user is already in use"

so you can not host a server and connect to it from the same account

How are you starting up your server? Going into the game or using the console?

ok move this to the windows section, this has nothing to do with linux....

what you need to do is run a dedicated server using srcds not the server in the game itself. follow the instructions on the front page http://www.srcds.com (just click on the windows box at the bottom)
