yea i have optimum online, but it has never done this before in the past 2 years ive ran the css server. Iam replacing the network card because that has caused me issues in the past.

What kind of router are you using? I've seen this at another person's house (it hit him at 7 users). We found out that router he was using didn't like having more then 6 open connections at time on it. We put in a better router, and that fixed the issue.

right now i have a dlink DGL-4300. I was thinking of upgrading to the dgl 4500

Im not sure if you have Mani installed on your TF2 server, if so, try running it without it. We took it off of ours, it was causing lag to the max. just a suggestion

what one would you reccomend? iam looking for one that can do both wired/wireless (if possible) otherwise ill buy an only wired one, and use a wireless access point. Could ya give me some suggestions as to what router you think would be good? thx =)

before you go changing routers try hooking up the server directly to the cable modem for a while and see then if it still lags, if it does then it's definitely your isp or your server.

if i could do that with out alot of work i would =/, the modem is downstairs. I was planning on buying a new router anyway. I just put in a new network card into my server computer (a netgear GA311) and when i check the speed tests the upload is about normal, but the download is 10000-15000kbps then it is on my other comps. Does that make sense that it would do that? according to optimum i should only be getting speas UP to 30000kbps, i just recorded a 56459 kbps speed. I know Download has nothing to do with the server but i figured id try to broaden my knowledge about all these network thingys.

Take that all with a grain of salt. Many providers have a "boost" (they all have there own names for it) that will throw off the speed test sites. The speed tests are a good estimate, but are no substitution for long term testing (kind of like feeling your head vs a thermometer).

With a good router you should be able to monitor (possibly via SNMP) the actual up and down of your connection. You can use NetMeter to keep an eye at the server (this was a Windows server right?).

Try this, get a butt connector (RJ-45 female to female) and that will allow you to use existing cable and just take the lan connection from the server, and hook it up to the ethernet connection on the modem. (no need for changing cables, etc. when youre done put it back like it was.) Like others have recommended try to isolate the cause.

Thanks for the info. I never even thought of using a connector, that is a great idea. Do those connectors cause any sort of noticable drop?. And as of that speed reporting higher then it should be, it only happens on the server computer where i just put a new netgear network card in, it reports around the same on alll the other computers plugged into the same router. However i did notice that it shows less upload to the server computer now (with no internet applications running that i can tell, not even the server).

Not as long a your combined cable run is under 250' (78m) and it's connected securely.

Did you remove all of the other devices from the network? (Never know when a pesky update will run.)

Hey woody thanks for the replies. No i have not removed any network devices. It just seems these speed differences are from that net card. Iam gonna try connecting my computers to the cable modem by themsleves 1by1, and check the speed/proformance. ill post back what i find out.

Hey i would like to thank everyone who helped me get this server up and working. I had 20 people in it tonight and pings were great. There was the occasional spike on the round restart and map change, but it ran nice and smooth. Thank you all =)
