Lan party coming up
#1
Theres a pretty big lan event coming up with 500+ people and I want to run a server for my clan (a CSS server). I can either run one from the box id be playing on, amd64 3200+ with a gig of memory, or a laptop with a 2.4ghz cpu and 256mb memory. If I use the laptop also I can put it on server row and run it under linux, but if i use the desktop id be playing at the same time.

Which would be a better option?

I personally would run the server on the laptop - That processor and ram should give you plenty of power. Running them both from your computer would really put a chokehold on your performance - Even with the AMD64 and a Gig of ram.

Awesome, should I dual boot and go with linux or would windowsxp be sufficient? If enough memory is left over I was going to run a stats php page.

256 seems kind of low... im guessing your going to have a high amount of player slots since its giong to be on a lan and you wont have to worry about uplaod bandwidth. it really depends on how many slots you want to fill up. what im getting at is that linux will save you more ram. but if your going to go with a single digit slotted server then you should be ok on xp.

Well Id like to go for maybe like 14-16 slots. Just did a fresh XP install on a new 7200rpm drive, so everything looks good except the memory.

If you're shooting for 14-16 I think you'll be fine under Windows memory wise as long as you aren't running anything else. I'm currently colocating a P4 2.8 / 512MB and it's running 2x16 Slot Pubs and a 11 Slot Private, Gene6 FTP Server, Apache, PHP, MySQL and ActivePerl and it's got about 100Mb to spare.

Yep - And I haven't experienced any lag issues yet either. You should be fine running those things on 256 - MySQL might cause a problem if you have enough people accessing it at once.
