SRCDS Will Not Update
#1
Exclamation
I've posted this on steam's forums and no one seems to know how to fix this issue....Hopefully you guys can

I start my server with:

Code:
./srcds_run -console -game cstrike +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 16 [b]-autoupdate [/b]

I thought this would keep my server up to date. Apparently I was wrong considering when I type 'version' into the console it reports:

Protocol version 7
Exe version 1.0.0.14 (cstrike)
Exe build: 19:21:00 Jan 14 2005 (2260)

If i'm not mistaken there was an update the 17th and yesterday the 24th. Obviously this did not take effect on my server. To attempt to solve this problem I tried to update the server manually by using the command:

Code:
./steam -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir . -username xxx -password xxx -remember_password

but when I type this in - instead of it running through a process of updating it gives this.

Checking bootstrapper version ...
Use:

Create a Steam Account:
-create <username> <password> <question> <answer>

Install or update HLDS:
-update <game> <installdir> <username> [<password> [Y]]
Y => remember password

View installed versions:
-version

Does anyone have an idea as to why this update is not being downloaded?

Just for reference you can check the steam forums so we dont have duplicated posts here. Thanks.

It looks like you have an old version of steam.
When you run ./steam -help you get a list of options you can use.
If you have the right version it should give you something like this:
Code:
WARNING: unrecognized parameter '-help'
Checking bootstrapper version ...

Use: steam -command <command> [parameters] [flags]
......

If the line starting with Use: doesn't have the -command option you have an old version. The old version of steam doesn't have the -command option and therefor it doesn't understand your command.

You could try to update it by running ./steam without giving any options.

Using ./steam with no options just brings up the command list and nothing happens.

-edit-

Oh yeah, I'm trying to do a clean setup for CS:S, but I'm running into this problem as well. And no matter what account I use, it says it doesn't exist. Even though I've been using it for the past couple of years.

-edit-

I'm thinking there has to be something wrong with the update servers now. Maybe overloaded with the big steam update right now?

In your case that is probably correct. WHen i setup my CSS server I experienced technical difficulties for several days because of a major update (screw steam).

As far as my problem goes when i try ./steam...

[cserver@morbid srcds_l]$ ./steam
Use:

Create a Steam Account:
-create <username> <password> <question> <answer>

Install or update HLDS:
-update <game> <installdir> <username> [<password> [Y]]
Y => remember password

View installed versions:
-version

I'm getting really frustrated. This is like over a week I've not been able to update my CSS server and noone has an answer....

Thank you guys for your posts by the way

I just rm'd my srcds_l dir to start over from the beginning. I created the srcds_l dir,
wget hldsupdatetool.bin
chmod -x hldsupdatetool.bin
./hldsupdatetool.bin
./steam

yet still all I get as an output is....

Use:

Create a Steam Account:
-create <username> <password> <question> <answer>

Install or update HLDS:
-update <game> <installdir> <username> [<password> [Y]]
Y => remember password

View installed versions:
-version

I am so fed up with SRCDS. I never had a problem running 1.6 servers. Can you guys give any explanation as to why in the world it would be acting this way....it was working fine before this past update.

G'day, I had the exact same problem when updating my server this morning. When you get stuck in this situation it seems impossible to get out of the loop - Steam will not update itself to the correct version.
The good news is I managed to fix it by following the details in this post:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=5f7c1b674dd424bc3f4a8f62000edad0&threadid=243109

Basically, just download another copy of the steam executable and write it over the top of the dodgy one.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I got the updated file from that link and it seems to be working now. I wish Valve would update the stupid thing on their website.

Just for simplicity. Here is what fixes this issue. Still, anyone have any idea as to why this happens. And next time this happens...where will we get another updated steam file.

=============================================
use an update steam file, get it:

http://users.lichtsnel.nl/~jap/steam/steam

and try again

(you might need to: rm ~/.steam -r)
=============================================

thanks to Japje of steampowered forums for this answer.

Well, the issue doesn't seem to be completely solved for me. Every time I get to cs_office, I get this error:

Quote:Downloading: .\cstrike\maps\cs_office.bsp
Compression Failure

Anyone else getting this?
