Starting a CS:S Server

I was starting a CS:S match server for my clan. I have a Dual PIII 500 MHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and 2 SCSI hard drives. The box is running on a full T1 connection (1.5 MB/s up and down). I got the server up and I live about an hour away from the server and I lag on the server. I get a ping of about 50-70. Any suggestions on why? I know it can handle at least up to 24 players without any lag, but I don't know what the problem is.


Oh and it would be nice if someone could also post the best sv_minrate, sv_maxrate, sv_maxupdaterate and sv_minupdaterate settings for the server.

what os? and when u say full t-1, you do mean dedicated right? and have you done a tracert to your server (start>run>>cmd>>tracert <ip>)?

Yeah, it's a dedicated T1 and it's on Linux. Oh and I just did a tracert, what did that do?

well, keep in mind, T1 is only 1.5mbits, which is really 187.5KByte/sec
and IIRC CS:S uses 32KByte/sec 24 players would probably be overusing, say 768KByte/sec even if it was 32kbit you'd be using almost all your bandwidth right there. also depends on your kernel and what not

it traces your route from your client comp to the server, basically giving you the time it takes to get from your comp to your server. each hop is like a network point, your first hop usually being your router at home and the last hop being your server. sometimes the network that your on may just plain suck, and nothing that you do to your home comp or your server (besides maybe moving it to another isp/location) wont help.
