Can i play on a different IP?
#1
i run a small server off the same computer i play on just for me and a few people and i have noticed a few strange things about it and was wondering if it is normal. first off i have notcied that when people see me playing the server on friends it shows the server as not responding and they can't connect via "join game". i have realized that this is because i am playing on a different IP, the internal one. and they have to conect to hte external one. also i myself can not connect to the external ip only ythe internal. is this normal?

Yes, perfectly. Some routers even notice when you connect to your own servers external IP and auto-connects you onto your server on the local IP, but these are rare.

Hmm weird, i've never had this problem before so i'm not too sure. Maybe someone else has and could chip in..

Not sure why it would cause errors and timeout though since it would just be forwarding onto the local IP anyway.

I thought I used to be able to connect to My server's external IP, but not any more. I don't see it in the Steam list either, only as LAN.

Hello i have the same problem like you.
i also run my server on the same machine or on an other computer within the same nework.and i I can connect in Lan, and some of my friend can connect via hamachi(do you know it?it simulates a virtual lan).but one of my friends can't connect so he needs the Ip.and i (how to find out the server ip?) (i tried to choose the internet ip of the server by visiting http://www.showmyip.com)
i gave him that one and there was "servr not responsing"=(
so did you find a solution?!?

Try opening all the correct ports required for players to join your server. Plenty of threads can be found on a forum search.

well im not sure if that site is good (it didnt work for me) so try this one

http://www.ipchicken.com/

you also cant just give them the ip right? did you format it ip;port# ? and if so what port did you give him. its most likely ports 27015 or 27016. try em both.

all im talking about with the ports is you cant just give someone the ip to connect to they have to have a port # also. for example what they should be typing in the console should look like this:

Connect IP : PORT

connect 79.104.147.38:27016 (obviously with your own IP and port)

are you just giving out the ip address with no port # attached?
