Ok, I'm hosting a stand-alone CS:S server.
(Stan-alone means there is no HL2 install...)
Anyway, peoples pings are GREAT and the CPU usage is always at 9 or so, sometimes around 16 even with 4 or so people in(the max joined at one time so far) and everyone lags. I lag even over a network to the server pc. The pings are fine but the re-loads of guns are all wierd and laggy and it takes a long time to shoot. This happens to everyone on my server. If you have any ideas please help. I'm kinda new to CS:S and HL. I'm really just good at UT and UT Mod servers, so please be understanding with me that I am kinda noobish.

Have you got an anti-virus or other programs running in the background on your server?

It might be tying up you hard disk head if the auto protect is on.
As a general rule of thumb try and avoid having background stuff running, especially if you're having trouble with lag.
It might not be anything to do with the AV, but maybe at least try running you server with the AV switched off just to see if it does improve the performance of it.

It's hosted via T-1.
What is AV?

AV = antivirus.
Connection seems good enough, must be background processes slowing things down.

I have a new idea. It may be that the tickrate is too low. How would I change it, I don't know if it's called tickrate in HL2 or CS:S but it's called tickrate in UT2k4 and all it's mods so, if you know what I'm talking about, please tell me how I would change it.

the last CS:S update came with a "-tickrate" option for use with the command line.

So, what do I do with that, what is the command line. In UT2004 it was a bat file that launched the server. There is no .bat file, just the exe. Where would I add it, and what do you think a good tickrate would be, or are the UT2004 and CS:S tickrates the same.

I guess it would go sometime after the -console. I have no idea what a good tickrate would be or what the function of the tickrate is for. sorry.

Tickrate, in UT, is the number of frames a second or so the server renders for each user. The higher the number the more bandwith needed, but each user will have a smoother connection.
