Question
Hey guys,

I'm currently renting 5 css servers, that's right, 5 Sad !Im thinking that there has to be a way for me to do this myself and save some money. I Also rent webspace & ventrilo too but i can deal with those being outsourced.

Below are the servers that I run;

26 slot 66 tick (regular css)
20 slot 66 tick (gun game mod, uses a lot of cpu i think)
24 slot 66 tick (death match mod, uses even MORE cpu im told)
12 slot 66 tick (surf server)
12 slot 100 tick (match server)

I was wondering if it would be possible to run all of these on one single machine without any lag issues. All of our servers are quite busy and are almost always full in the evening hours. I would actually be willing to elminiate the 24 slot deathmatch server if that ment I could host all of the rest on one server (though, id love to keep it.)

If anyone could tell me what sort of machine I could get away with assuming these servers will all be full at the same time. Also, what sort of connection & bandwidth should I be looking at?? Im browsing the web for server prices and there is TONS of options, Im a bit lost.

Thanks in advance, Smile

Chris

quad core xeon or opteron will do, will take more than 10 mbit in/out at peak time.

Sorry, but before I contact anyone about options or sales, I would first like to see what people's opinions are regarding what I should be renting. If you have any advice, I would love to hear it in this thread. Im not looking for a sales pitch just yet though.

sorry, but you can get dual 270's and 2G of RAM at softlayer.com for $250. i would head over to http://www.webhostingtalk.com and check the offers section. many knowledgeable people (particularly about dedicated servers and colo) on that site.

EDIT: forgot to mention that prices are VERY dependent on where you want the server to be!

@fqdn

webhostingtalk.com is a great place, Ive been going there for a while now. Ive actually been looking into defconservers.com, they have a good reputation from what I can see and I have had a few people personally recommend them to me (plus they have chicago locations).

Also, I noticed they offer gamer configured machines that include tcadmin & win2003 server. Im just trying to decided what type of machine i need. Im trying to find out if I could get away with the following, maybe do a ram upgrade if needed.

Dual Opteron 252
2 x 2.6Ghz 2x1mb Cache
1GB DDRI 400mhz
250GB SATA II HDD
2000GB Transfer
$259/month

for the number of slots/servers you want to run i would get the dual woodcrest from defcon. it already has 2G of RAM onboard with everything else being the same. that's $50 more but will be less depending on how much the ram upgrade is monthly. if it's $20 or $30 then you're actually paying only $20-30 more for the box and it has way more horsepower (dual single cores vs dual dual-cores so you can split the servers across more procs)

have you checked your bandwidth usage? 2000Gb is going to go real fast with all those servers.
