Mac Mini Source DS?
#1
Has anyone tried to get the dedicated server to run on a OSX machine yet? I know the main game won't, but how about the dedicated server? OSX is based off of BSD, so we should be able to use the BSD modifications to run HL2:DS servers, right?

While true, Mac OS X is based off BSD, i think its still modifided to much for a BSD modified SRCDS

It's not a question of hardware - it's a question of software. What if I ran Gentoo on a mac, would it then run Source: DS?

I don't think so, you're running a ppc version of gentoo, and i don't think theres a binary compiled on ppc maybe its possible to port it using the SDK but i doubt that. Maybe if valve gets enough requests(which i doubt they they anyways) they'll port it to the ppc architecture

actually, technically.. it is. in this case its a matter of the CPU architecture, which is.. well hardware

actually, i think a dual G5 running a ppc version of Gentoo and a few GB of ram would be pretty sweet

For clarification if others come across this thread looking for similar info:

Source DS on Mac PPC is very much a hardware issue. Software running on PPC hardware must specifically be compiled on PPC hardware to run.
If the software is created with portability in mind that is trivial, if not ...

The difference between Intel x86 architecture and IBM PPC architecure lies within it's "Endianess" or in other terms, what differs is the direction of bytes in a word within the CPU architecture.
Laymen speak: On PPC, instructions run in numbers ranging from low to high, on Intel it's the other way around, hence the confusion.

Once again, if the code is written in plain ISO standard C++, compiling on Mac should not be a problem. If for example the server contains inline byte/machine code specifically written for Intel, converting is a little b#¤@h.....

Hope this helps.

ps. for all ye wonders, Intel is Little Endian and PPC is Big Endian

It's fine not to like some things but at least have factual reasons.

Their server:
http://www.apple.com/xserve/

Their server OS:
http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/

If you had the source code to the server then it could be ported (possibly much work) to run on any OS. However, you only have the binary. While it runs on Linux, it only runs on Linux on Intel or AMD hardware which is x86 compatible. The G4/G5 is a different animal.
