New to linux and server setup need help
#1
Alright guys, I had already made a windows server and because of virus problems decided to scrap windows and go linux. Setupas follows and I'll tell you how far I got, but am stuck

OS: Fedora Core 3
Mobo: Shuttle AN35N Ultra 400
CPU: Barton 2500+
RAM 512MB single channel PC2700
HDD: 40gb maxtor
Video: Ati 9000 pro
Sound: On-board

Where I am at: Already have a username and password that I set up in wondows, so I would like to use that. currently have downloaded hldsupdate.bin and is in /usr/steam/srcds_l

problem: WHenever I run command

./steam -command update -game "Counter-strike source" -username xxxxxxx -password xxxxxxx -remember_password

i get this in the console

Checking bootstrapper version ...
Use:

Create a Steam Account:
-create <username> <password> <question> <answer>

Install or update HLDS:
-update <game> <installdir> <username> [<password> [Y]]
Y => remember password

View installed versions:
-version

Now as I said i already have a user account and all, and even when I attempt to creat e new one, it does the same thing. Any ideas?

Edit: Okay surfed around the forum and came up with this; Instead of using the "-" switch before items such as "command" or "create" I did this instead:

./steam -update counter-strike source ./ xxxxx [*****[Y]]

where xxxxx is my username and ***** is my password

Now I recieve the error connection closed by peer. Any ideas? Also, I don't think it's ssh related since I can surf and browse and so on in Firefox.

Okay, I had the same problem as you. I believe the problem lies in the syntax for the update, indicating you've got an old version of Steam.

http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=228&p_created=1094780237&p_sid=Nq_n4hwh&p_lva=&%20p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX%3Cbr%20/%3E%203Jvd19jbnQ9MSZwX3Byb2RzPTE1JnBfY2F0cz0wJnBfcHY9MS4%3Cbr%20/%3E%20xNTsyLnUwJnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZ%3Cbr%20/%3EWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1SU0E*&p_li=&p_topview=1

Although the problem doesn't fit the description, try it anyway, it may just help.

I managed to figure it out last night here is what I did.
# denotes a command line
Done NOT in root but as user

# mkdir srcds
# cd srcds
# wget http://www.steampowered.com/downloads/hldsupdatetool.bin
# chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin
# ./hldsupdatetool.bin
# ./steam
# ./steam -update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir . <username> <password>

after that it flew well. As you said, I think it was in the syntax, because it went through a few hoops before it started downloading the files. Had to login a ferw times and run the -update command a few times, but it's all done now. All I have left to do is create the server.cfg file, apply some mods for stats, voting, etc and I'll have a clan server up and running after 2 weeks of trying to figure this out in both windows and Linux!
