first go here: http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=11

and make sure all the ports they listed are forwarded on your router, if you are using a dsl modem or something like that to forward check there too though i have heard that modems may or may not work (even though you configure it, sometimes it just doesn't work). in that case i would turn OFF the dhcp server on the modem purchase a router, such as a linksys befsr41 or befsr81 or if you need wireless a wrt54g, and then forward the ports to your particular server. i highly suggest putting your server on a static ip (outside the DHCP range of the router). in most cases the router will assign you an internal ip anywhere from 192.168.1.100-254, set your server to be 192.168.1.50 and then forward all the ports to that IP. this is just in case your server decides to renew it's ip (on the local lan) and if it receives another ip your forwarding setup will cease to work.

if your server still does not show up most routers have a dmz option which means it is now directly on the internet with no router firewall. assign your now static server to the dmz and then see if people will connect. if they are able to connect then your port forwarding configuration is not set correctly. if they still are not able to connect then your ISP may be blocking something and you will have to talk to them. you do not want to leave the server on the dmz too long as it opens it up for all kinds of hacks and other fun stuff that people want to do to you.

you still have to know what your external ip is and players will connect using that ip, if it changes then they have to connect to the new ip.

hi, i rally appreciate your help its just i need to know something regarding a static ip: my current LAN ip is 192.168.1.3 (and ive NEVER seen that change) and ive registere like i told you above to http://www.dyndns.org wich tracks ur dynamic ip- my host name according to http://www.dyndns.com is 'devingameserver.dyndns.org' and im pretty sure that if one of my freinds add that ^^^ they will always beable to connect to that even though my WAN ip changes because lke i said i registerd to http://www.dyndns.org and i dont have enough pocket money a month to afford a 2mb line with static ip, please can u advise me on another way on doing this and also. the routers supplied above (u suggested) does these routers a DMZ on them??? thnx alot man

kind regards

all of the linksys i suggested have dmz, have you tried disabling the dhcp on your modem and plugging the server directly into it (this is just like the dmz)? that way it will get assigned your WAN ip address. do that see if people can connect, if so then your port forwarding is not working correctly.

nobody has told me anything about your network so i don't know where you got it from. if you turn off your dhcp server and plug your server in directly, do an "ipconfig /all" from the command line and post the output.
