CS:S will work on any* "version" of linux. I would suggest something with the 2.4.22 kernel, probably to most beaten and tested to be absofreakinglutely stable kernel there is. If you want a fast server use gentoo if you can understand it. If not go buy mandrake and click the 'do everything for me' button.

I wouldn't recommend using the 2.4.x kernel tree, i would suggest 2.6.8 or 2.6.9. I run a Gentoo linux server running 2.6.9 with release 9 of the gentoo devs kernel patch and it runs sweet, when idle i have absolute zero load, when i have a 16 slot server filled i think load is about 1.00 maybe lower.

So in short, i'd recommend Gentoo running 2.6.x

I'll add another Slackware recommendation to the list there. Slackware is particularly suited to servers. But you will need to know what you are doing, or at least do a little research.

I think any distro, as long as you install the basic requirements. But when you reach a specific hardware requirement, I think it's all up to bandwidth.
But, I think Gentoo with only the nessecary features is enough.
