Combine Two Servers?
#1
Now I know that this may seem somewhat like an esoteric kind of question, (at least to me it does) and may be absurd to even think of this, but can you tell me if this exists, and if so, how?
My friend has a server that is IDENTICAL to mine, and he runs it out of his house, as do I. I was just curious, would it be possible to "merge" the two servers so that, let's take this example.

I have 10 player cap in my server, and so does he. Say I have 5 people on mine, and 3 on his. Would it be possible to make a "virtual bridge" between the two servers so that people could "frag", if you will, between the two servers? Basically what I'm getting at is just making a cluster over the internet. THis sounds painfully far fetched to me, but would be absolutely awesome if this could be accomplished.

Please let me know if you need me to make it clearer. Many thanks in advance!

well, unless you mean just create an online cluster, possibly, but if you don't have the bandwidth, it'll just cause problems
linking the 2 physical servers (not the game on the server itself) It can be done in an internal network, but i've never seen it done online, you both would probably need well over 3-4mbps if not more to handle sending the operating system information and the game information.

That's a damn shame. =|

Woops, you changed your response from "No." to something lengthier. Allow me to read.

Oh, ok, hmm... I didn't know that only clusters were possible, I made that up. =P Anyway, we both have 512kbit, that would cause problems, and not worth it, right?

Oh, I saw the 3mbit deal, ok then. So yet another dream dies... Does it matter if we both just use a CLI form of Linux? I guess the same amount of info needs to be sent. Nvm, thanks!

Yes, at first i thoguht you mean link the 2 games as one, then i saw cluster and i thought you mean combine your machines to act as one.

I've never seen it done spread across an outside network, clustering is pretty much done inside a network.

You can look into clustering and see how its done. both machines might need to be identical hardware wise i think though.

Aw damn, identical hardware? My dream is being buried further and further down in the ground. =P It would be cool though to combine games if that was possible. Thanks for the info!

Try regular clustering, you can find many ways through google.

Regular clustering demands the servers to be local, (as in, same house) right? We can't really do that, since we wanted to have the computers elsewhere, if not, he can get a bunch of semi-ok computers from the galt house and cluster 'em. Smile
