you did: cp /boot/config-2.6.9-24.0.2.EL .config right? not the exact thing from the docs which would essentially copy a blank file if anything since it doesn't exist.
you can't do make menu config unless you do the cp command right else you need to go through every single option and choose since it starts from scratch. the cp command gives it a template to go on.

yea i did the cp /boot/config-...my kernel...ELsmp and the make menuconfig worked except that i couldnt find the timer thing to set it at 1000hz and i couldnt find the preemptive whatever part either.

it's in there, 2 deep from the main menu i think, i've only used that once or twice.
