Hey guys, I really need better performance, i spent about 10 minutes googling, couldn't find a tut on this...even though u guys always seem to find them, heh.

Thanks in advance, you can post links or, if ur feeling really generous, you could just tell me how.

Running AMD 3800+
1GB DDR PC3200 RAM
100Mbps NIC
80GB HDD
Debian OS
uname -a = "debian 2.6.8-2-386 Aug 16 2005 i686 GNU/Linux"

Anyways, thanks!

Pretty much the tutorial you want to find is how to compile a kernel manually because that is what you are doing. If you do not have root access then you cannot do this. The option for the kernel timer should be in the same section you set which type of architecure you are using.

starting 9/24/2006 if your problem has been solved please edit your first post and add [solved] to the begining of the title. Thanks.

well I've got root for the box, so it's not a problem, but I really don't want to fuck it up, so yeah. Thanks for the response.

Hi,

You need to compile a non debian kernel custom kernel many will advise against this. I have had to do this to set the timer on my servers for 100tickrate servers. This is a basic guide:

1. Get Kernel Sources kernel.org
2. Download to box in /usr/src dir
3. Extract .tar.bz2 with tar xvjf command.
4. Copy old kernel config /boot/config-2.6.8-2-686 to /usr/src or copy it to the folder you have extracted the kernel sources to ie /usr/src/2.6.17.11/2.6.17.11.
4. cd into the kernel sources dir and then run make menuconfig
5. load kernel config location for example /usr/src/config-2.6.8-2-686 and then set the timer frequency in the processor options. Pres esc and then save the config.
6.The boot and intrd section is on this site http://www.falkotimme.com/howtos/debian_kernel2.6_compile MAKE sure you do this properly otherwise it will not boot.

And yes this is a pain if you don't know what your doing. If you need anymore help just post again.
