How much is a criminal defense lawyer going to cost me
#1
I am in the US and I just got charged with something I never saw coming, and now I am trying to figure out how I am supposed to afford a lawyer. I hear numbers all over the place from a few grand to six figures. How do people actually pay for this and what should I realistically expect?

The cost of criminal defense lawyer varies wildly depending on the charges, the lawyer's experience, and whether the case goes to trial. One firm breaks down what to expect here https://arkadybukhlawfirm.com/ . A simple misdemeanor might run a flat fee while a felony that goes to trial gets billed hourly and drains a hundred grand fast. Many attorneys offer payment plans or take a big retainer upfront then bill against it. Do not hide your budget when you call around, a decent lawyer will tell you straight if your case is not worth their fee.

Check if your job has any prepaid legal plan or if your family can help with the retainer immediately. The lawyer will not start work until that first payment clears, and delays at the beginning hurt your case.
