You choose what router you have, not modem. then you sleect steam server and it'll walk you through how to forward your ports. This will allow users to connect to your server.

If you're using WiFi if you get low signals, you're going to get extreme lag.

Unless your cable/dsl modem can send out wireless signals, then it'd still technically be a router since it can route wireless signals.

yeah, here, this is the exact link you need:
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54GS/Steam_Server.htm

I would provide the exact steps since i have the same router, except i flashed it to use something called DD-wrt which turns my linksys wifi into a linux based wifi router so i have better signal and routing. So i think the interface is a bit different.

You enter the last digit of your LAN ip that the srcds server uses. for example, this current box is uning 192.168.1.205 so i would enter 205 you can find yours out by clicking the start button, select run and type cmd.exe type in ipconfig you should see SOMETHING like this:
Quote:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : ri.cox.net
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.205
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

You'll still need to forward your ports, are you putting your LAN ip in the address bar? or are you using 192.168.1.1? whoever setup your network could have change the IP of your outer, you can find out by refering to ipconfig and looking at the ip of your gateway.

Right, but to get to the port forward you must put in the gateway ip, which chances are is http://192.168.1.1
if that is not working, then you must find your gateway IP from ipconfig like i showed you before.

Look here in the attachment. While the interface IS totally different, my router is the Linksys wrt54GS

Right, where you put your lan ip, it'll later show you what to put in the box for your port forward interface. refer to my screenshot and scroll down the portforward page. when you put 102 it'll refer to it when adding your port ranges, however, to connect to your routers interface you must go to http://192.168.1.1

Ok, in your webbrowser address you put http://192.168.1.1 or you should be able to just click on that. that'll bring you to your gateway it'll ask for your username and password which MIGHT be admin/admin as username/password

when it asks for the static IP it means YOUR lan IP which you would then put in .102

Seriously this isn't a hard task, go to http://192.168.1.1 login, click on application and gaming, forward the needed ports adding 102 at the box before the enable checkbox. or click on the DMZ tab, add 102 and click save settings and you're all set, no need to forward a port, ever.
