Preventing Condensation In Winter
#1
I tried winter camping last year in a 4-season mountaineering tent, but the condensation was a nightmare. I woke up every morning with frost on the inside walls and my sleeping bag was damp. Is there any way to avoid this? I keep hearing about "hot tents" but I am not sure if they actually solve the moisture problem or just make it warmer.

Condensation is the biggest enemy in winter, and it happens because nylon/polyester fabrics don't breathe—they trap the moisture from your breath inside. The solution is 100% to switch to a breathable canvas winter tent equipped with a wood stove. RBM Outdoors makes some of the best ones on the market. The poly-cotton fabric allows moisture to escape, and the dry heat from the wood stove drives the humidity out of the air. It keeps your gear, your sleeping bag, and your clothes bone dry. I have spent weeks in RBM tents in deep snow and never had a drop of condensation. It is safer too, because wet insulation doesn't work. If you are serious about cold weather camping, the investment in breathable canvas is mandatory.
