What would be good hardware for...
#1
I am considering buying a BUDGET server that would run on Windows xp pro(sorry...not linux). I was wondering what the almost minimum hardware i could get to run 100 slots (and win xp pro) and what would the minimum connection necessary be for about 80 slots? (In mbps upload, please). I'd prefer AMD over intel. I only want processor and ram estimates from you. I'll figure out the price, just tell me the minimum processor and ram.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ might do the trick. But I'm guessing it's pushing the limit running 80 slots on one machine. Also XP as a server.. oh noes..

what comes to the upload.. theoretically you need 12Mbps. That's the theoretical maximum if you set maxrate to 20000.

If you wanna do it with budget and really wanna run that many slots (what, four 20 player servers?) Buy two A64 X2 4000+ with 2GB memory and run them on Linux.

That's my advice :p

It's not possible to run 2 S939 cpu's on 1 server. Better go for a dual AMD Opteron S940 265 ( 4 x 1,8 Ghz) with 2 or 4 gb ram (with 2 you need to auto restart all servers everyday to keep ram usage low).

That wil run around 4 x 32 slots at max.

I was thinking like 4 10 slot servers, and then a little extra processing power for a ftp server that won't be used much. So, 6Mbps upload for 40 players?

I currently run an 8 slot server on 384kbps upload with no problems, I can't see why you would need so much upload. So, maybe 3Mbps upload...it would be on the edge, but could it work?

What could an AMD Athlon 1.8Ghz do with 2gigs of ram? I'm curious about the limits of certain hardware.

Yeah I know. I was thinking two separate computers Cool

Though you are probably right that two Dualcore opterons with one mobo and case will be cheaper Big Grin

Like I said, it's the theoretical maximum you need. I was thinking of a high tickrate-server. But for 40 players you need atleast the 3Mbps upload. But if you're gonna get your server hosted you should go for the 10Mbps just be sure. We have 2x 18 player tickrate 100 servers and 10Mbps bandwidth and we're roughly using half of it when the servers are full.

I need to know more. Athlon XP? Athlon 64? We have Athlon 64 X2 4000+ with two servers and we also run our match server on the same machine. When the two servers are full the processor usage is around 30-40% per core and the total CPU-usage is around 30-50% depending what's happening on the server.

if you set all values to 0 which is infinite, would you use 99999999Mbps? there is a limit just like server download speed.

the max rate is 30000 even if you don't limit it. It's always funny to see players with rate like 50000 Toungue
