Best, You will get over a 1000 different answers for this. I have used FC3 and FC4. They both worked, but seemed like resource hogs. I am thinking of changing to Debian because I am sick of Fedora's messed up system updater - Yum. I have had many problems with FC5 and decided to dump that release.

My advice is to choose a distro and just install srcds and play with it. You will learn what you like and don't like about that distro and it will allow you to make a better decision on which distro you want to finally use.

I have ran srcds on FC4, Debian, Gentoo, and Freebsd.....I would rate them in the following order from best to worst.....(just my opinion though with my system)
FreeBsd
Gentoo
Debian
FC4

FreeBsd was the best, but you have to install linux port, but it still ran the smoothest also with the fewest processes (I had it to 19).

True, and I dont quite see the point in using BSD, when you have to emulate some linux shit just get srcds to work, thus having the emulator using up resources along with srcds, is just beyond me.

the best atm is slackware but with 2.6.x kernel, not the 2.4.12 as default.

Its kind of hard to say which one is the best. There really isnt one. It's all personal preference. Ive heard people say, Oh this is the best. Tried em and it wasnt the best for what hardware I had. I tried about 10 different distros before I found one that worked "the best" for me. And that was ubuntu because of it's ease of use, and it was the only distro that wouldn't cause my laptop to overheat and power off. Also it had the least amount of running processes in the BG, and also consumed the least amount of memory. But that was my setup, It could be different for you. I then put it on my desktop and boy was it smokin fast. If i were you I would download as many distros as possible and start testin em out.

I recommend it for being a Server. If your going to use this Box as a client side computer then use ubuntu or Fedore.

What is so good about Slackware is it's stable and security. It's still in 10.2 which is 2.4.31 kernel. They are working on 11 right now, but if you get 10.2, you have to update the Kernel to 2.6.x!

If you'er going to use this, i say dont install the GUI (KDE or GNOME). Just run SRCDS from Command Line, this will help free up CPU and Memory. If you really need GUI, there are some GUI outs there that don't take up much CPU or Memory... (I just forgot there names)

GUI- Here is one that is light on the System
