my startup line is:
./srcds_run -username username -password password -game cstrike +maxplayers 12 +map de_dust +ip 212.50.xxx.xx -port 27015 -autoupdate -remember_password

Stab in the dark... file permissions? Perhaps you installed the srcds as a root but now are trying to update it from a non-privleged user who doesn't have write access to the files so the updates aren't actually being installed?

Just guessing tho really.

illegal instruction means that something is compiled for the wrong CPU. either that, wrong cpu instructions such as SSE SSE2 mmx mmx2 ednow, etc. What cpu are you using and what distro?
