Help with SRCDS

Hello, first I'd like to thank everyone here for the great amount of help you've provided, I've found lots of useful info here that I never would of seen anywhere else! Toungue

I recently have been trying to host a Counter-Strike Source SRCDS server from my home computer, and I've gotten it all the way to running the server and joining it from behind the same router, however I haven't been able to allow any players from outside the network on. I know that this is a router/port problem and I've read the thread on how to do it, however it doesn't provide all the needed info that my router needs to open the port.

It's a NetGear wired/wireless router (I'm on the wired portion of course) running on a 1106.6 kbps DSL connection (Which I read was more than suitable for a multi-player server, I'm only hoping for 5-10 players at one time).

Here is a screenshot of my port forwarding page:

As well as the setup page:

I know it's not setup correctly now (Haven't changed it back yet), but I've tried many many other combinations suggested by other sites to get it to work and have yet to see results. The closest I got was a friend a few miles away getting a scrambled error message that made no sense what so ever. Other else they all get the "Connection failed after 4 tries." message.

The tutorial just said "add port 27015", as you can see mine asks for Service Name (SRCDS?) and Starting and Ending ports (27000-27015?), and I've been a bit confused by the different IP adresses, as I have the one SRCDS gives me for within the network, and my external IP.

Also, once (if) I get this working, do I give my external IP and 27015 as the port? IE: 12.345.67.890:27015 ?

I hope I haven't overloaded you too much, this is my first time trying to run a CS:S server from my home computer. Many thanks in advance! Big Grin

alright, I am going to try and get all of this..

port range- 27015-27015 (just that port needs to be open)

service name- just so you know what it is, can be anything, srcds works just dandy

server ip - should be the servers lan ip

when you give your ip out to friends, you should give your external ip (port forwarding forwards the external ip on that port to the internal ip)

I think thats everything.

Thanks! I'll try it out now.

EDIT:

Sorry for being so noobish, but is this the LAN IP I need to put into the router? Rolleyes

As long as you only got one external ip (usually this is the case) If you got more than one computer in the network remember to NAT the ports as well as open them in the firewall, basicly I see that I have repeated skeletor nowToungue So, if you cant seem to get it to work, check out http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm you can find lots of help hereWink

Sorry to bug you again, but even after setting the router back up my friends still can't see it on their favorites list (Using xFire), and I used the external IP + 27015 address. I also tried searching it on Gametiger, and it didn't find it either.

Do you have any other suggestions as to what might be causing this?

Just ask if you need any more info from me.

Thanks again! Big Grin

hmm.. can you connect to the server using the lan ip? (being on the same LAN) and also make sure the ip of the server hasn't changed.

you may also try to just dmz the server in your router. I am not sure how to dmz on a netgear router though. What if your friends were to open the game, and type into console "connect externalip:27015" and see if it connects.

there was a netgear problem awhile ago that made the server showing up screwy. If they can connect like that, then you should upgrade your routers firmware.

I hate to tell you this BUT it has been discovered there's a problem with NetGear Routers using SRCDS........

I to have a NetGear model WGT624 v3.......it worked for sometime at first then now it can't host anymore......I did all I can, even used DMZ with no results whatover......

The culprit of the problem is overehating which will eventually end up damaging the cpu on the router preventing you from fully using it....

You can read more about it here at Netgear forums.....funny thing is some owners are doing something about it.....

oh man.. Makes sense though.. Glad I haven't had that problem with my linksys switch, or routers.. lol. If they would overheat just from playin WOW a couple hours.. heh.. at my house they would be torched after a day (my home network is used pretty heavily 24/7).

anyways though, that could be the problem.

on a side note though, it would be pretty pimp to mod out a router/switch to match my case.. if I ever get it done :\ Toungue

Thank you very much, I'll be sure to try those out as soon as I get a chance.

I also have a wired Linksys router, BEFSR41v6 I believe, although I think heard that one had firmware problems or something as well. Just let me know if you think I should switch to that one. I'll try to get more info on it as far as the ports and firmware goes.

If you want you can reach me on AIM if you think it would be faster. My SN is NorCalK 26042.

Thanks again.

That linksys router should work just fine. I used that same router for a long while. Well I still use it to a degree.

I went through 4 routers before i got one that worked. I tried the netgear, linksys and finally got the RT31P2 linksys to work. I had setup everything like all the post said to do and that was the only one that made the connection and forwarded the ports like it should. I had to setup my wireless linksys WRT54G as an AP. I am on comcast and they dont block any ports. The router locks the ip address in and it stays good until you do a hard reset of the router. Tht was my experience with the routers and port forwarding. You can find my server at [AKS] DoD Source if you wnat to see how it runs.

Server Specs:
IBM Netfinity 7000 M10
4 xeon 500 processors
4 gigs ram
scsi raid
Server 2003

you must of not done something right, cuz every linksys router I have used has worked fine. right now I run a befsr41, which was actually the first one i bought about 4 years ago and it works just fine for any type of server i run through it. including apache webserver, a ftp server, mysql server, and a mail server.. along with srcds server, and for a little while a TMN server.
