Server specs?
#1
Hi, i have a pretty good computer (1024 MB High-Quality RAM, Athlon 64 3200+) and i wish to run a dedicated server on this machine. So i installed the dedicated server tool via Source.

But how much of the computer does this dedicated server use? Or could i still use the computer normally with the dedicated server in the background like msn or steam or some other program?

It could use upto 40% processor when server is full and lots of action is taking place... Ofcourse that will vary. Your system should run the server fine it's the connection bandwidth that more of an issue to be worried about.

Better answering this: What type of connection do you have and how many slots do you plan on running?

A fully loaded 16 player server generally uses 700-800kbps downstream and 700-900kbps upstream. On my linux server it uses ~19% CPU time and ~6-7% Memory. This is based on my sv_maxrate being set to 10000.

ISP's generally sell bandwidth in GB/Month. So if you're planning on having one 16-18 player server full for 10/12 hours per day you'll need around 50GB/month of usage (Obviously you'll want the burstable speed as fast as possible - 10Mbps good 100 better).

Also, check our your ISP's peering to make sure that they are well connected to the major backbones in your country at good speeds.

You could always rent from a provider, hint hint...

Mention this "SRCD.com" in the notes field and the price might even get reduced.

I have just set up my server.

It is a Windows 2000 Server with Dual P3 866's with 1GB of Ram with 5 SCSI (10,000) Drives.

The cable connection is 6 Meg down and 513 KB up.

What is the recommended number of players for this setup?

Currently, I have it set to 12 players.

I only plan on running this from 5pm to Midnight during the week. Then Friday 5pm until Midnight on Sunday.

Thanks!!!

I have not had it max'd yet.

A friend of mine were playing and someone from Germany joined the game. The server is in my basement and I am located in NY. He was pinging (according to CS:S) 180, I guess that is not bad from Germany.

Hopefully tonight it will be filled. (The Jerky Boys - Play Here NumNutz)
