I host several game servers on a dedicated server and the busy ones have been having major problems lately where guns are doing no damage even with direct head/body shots (there's even blood splatter).

I assume this has to do with using the default kernel (fps is limited to 64).

Upgrading the kernel scares me since it can fubar the system. So i started researching other methods and i found the following:

apt-get install linux-headers-lowlatency
apt-get install linux-lowlatency

I can't find any specific information what these 2 packages do; they're a either realtime kernel or 1000hz kernel.

So my question is; is it safe to install the above packages? Will they increase my FPS to 1000? Or will they affect the stability and performance of the OS in a negative way?

1000FPS is pointless, you'll be utilizing more CPU with no benefit.

But to answer your question. No, those packages won't help, valve locked the fps to the tickrate.

Some of us can perform magic and fix this, but still your average CSS player could be told the server is 1000fps and they wouldn't be the wiser.

Magic would not be utilizing more CPU for no benefit. It was always a marketing scam.
