Dedicated server hangs at launch, "Logging into anonymous gameserver account"

My dedicated server was fine yesterday. I've changed nothing, but did run the update tool today. After updating it, it launches but hangs, with the last line in the console saying "Logging into anonymous gameserver account".
I googled the line and only found it in console dumps that people were pasting into whatever thread they had started about various problems. I didn't see any postings about this particular line.
Anyone know why it would hang there? It's a gmod server but I doubt that matters since all the postings I saw were different games. Just putting it out there in case...

I ran the update but it didn't seem to update anything. It definitely scrolled text that showed it was performing steps but it was only for about 15 seconds and it exited.

I decided to just start from scratch so I did that and redownloaded and everything, but I'm actually getting the exact same thing, WTF?

At least you have two more lines
Mine doesn't get past the login line.
This is weird, no one's seen this before?

I actually fixed this! You have to verify all your files again by using the download.bat
Make a new file called download.bat and put this in it.

I did this again, and it verified all files and it turns out I was missing some and it fixed it! Try this.

I tried to verify all files, but I'm still having the same problem with "Logging into anonymous...blah blah blah".
