Setting up a first server

Hello guys,

I am trying to set up 2on2 / 5on5 match server. My first try looked like 64fps server with 20-100 ping (standard here in my country on match servers is below 20ms). It has been generating some packet loses and choke also. Now It's running on like 500fps and pings 20-40ms but fps is not stable, it's more like 280-510 fps, but mostly near 500.

I am using actual version of hlds, running console mode, with parameters:
+sys_ticrate 660 +sv_maxupdaterate 101.
And rates configuration:
rate 25000
sv_minrate "0"
sv_maxrate "25000"
sv_minupdaterate "4"
sv_maxupdaterate "101"
sys_ticrate "660"
fps_max "660"


Internet connection:
I am pinging abroad servers with like < 3-5ms response
Upload speed is usually 4 Mbps+ ( mostly 8-10 Mbps )

Hardware used:
I use laptop for this server ( Smile ), It's Intel core i5-2410M (2,31GHz)

Any ideas of improving this server? I know it's shitty laptom pseudoserver but i think n' hope It can run server for 10 ppl without any issues, am I right?

I mean I dont have any experience running game servers on a laptop. If you already have it setup or ready you might as well use it.

The only downside will be your residential home connection. It's not near a tier 1 edge so your latency want be optimal.

Well, I found out this:
Now, after setting up FPSbooster.exe and mm_timer plugin, using some computer tweaking software (IObit GB3.0), computer can run 660FPS server in range 630-660 which is pretty stable imho (is it?). I am having 0-1 ms, friend who lives nearby is having 0-3ms, people from 150 kilmeters radius having 15-20ms but mainly ppl having bad internet connection and they have ping 80 on real 1000FPS server with serious T1 connection, on my server they have loss, choke and 120+ ms. BUT! For example one friend from Great Britain (I am from Slovakia), distance is about 1500 km ~ 1000 miles, his ping is ~50 but he says it's pretty playable and the hitboxes are nice, on other Slovakian "serious" servers he has ~50-100ms also.

Is there any software or mmplugin which makes ppl with weaker connection ping me better, or help me/them somehow to make it working for them atleast on playable level.

Now I found a screenshot, from 2on2 funmatch, this guy Is from Czech Republic, Prague which is 380miles, abroad. He have been having < 25ms

I mean, if ppl from abroad etc can have good ping (atleast comparable to serious servers), Is there any chance to improve quality for players with worse connection?

Your latency or "ping" is is based upon the distance from your PC to your destination server and the quality of the connection between them. There is nothing you can do to improve this except get the best Internet connection to you home possible.

I'd be very curious to see how good your connection is. If you'd like to share with us, please run this test: http://speedtest.net/ and post the results in a reply here.

Most home Internet connections are unable to run servers more then 10-12 people without having the trouble you're having. The most significant handicap is going to be your upload speed. If you're running less than a 5 Mbps upload speed, you can pretty much for forget running more than 12 clients on your server with decent rates and no loss. And even with that speed, you need to tweak your server and client rate settings perfectly to get them to run well. That's why people rent servers for competitive gaming. A home Internet connection just can't cut it in most cases and it's just not worth the time and effort to make it have way decent for very many players.
