Complete Noob here, can someone help?

I'm so confused right now as to how this stuff works. If someone has a guide that shows not only *what* we are doing, but *why* we do each step, that would be awesome. I read a bunch of guides as to how to install and update a server, but nothing that really helps in my situation.

Basically, someone with a Mac wants me to update his server. I have access to the files through ftp (something that I haven't used before either). How do I update the files through an ftp client rather than locally? All the files are there, but I need to update them. I can't figure out a way to run hldsupdatetool in the ftp folder. I'm not even sure if that's what I'm supposed to do... Can someone help me figure this out? I can find tons of guides saying how to run these tools, but nothing I found tells me what I'm doing.

BASIC INFO
Server OS: No Idea
Processor: No Idea
Ram: No Idea
Game(s): Team Fortress 2
Start Up Command: No Idea
Admin Mods: None as far as I know

You can't run it over ftp....

The best thing you can do is to update locally and copy the files i guess.
That will take a long time but if you don't have local access to the machine i guess that is your best bet.

I'm trying to just DL all the server stuff onto my comp so I can copy/paste it over, but when I run HLDSupdatetool, the server doesn't load. I don't have any of the folders/files I'm supposed to. How do I download the server info itself? Does anyone know what is going on? I keep running the tool (with the .bat file in the dir) and it flashes on screen for like one sec then leaves. It's not even there long enough to read.

put a "pause" command in the end up the batch file.....

But really, get access to the machine the server is on, and run the update from there.... All the other shit will probably just fail horribly.

Ok, thanks so much for helping! I'll contact the guy that runs it and tell him what you told me.
