SRCDS Steam group


How many game servers I can run??

Question 
Here is my server information:
Currently installed system: CentOS 5.5 64x
Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz
RAM: 4096 MB [4GB]
Internet Connection: 100Mbps Uplink Port (1500GB bandwidth/month)

Is it possible to run smoothly:
Two TF2 24 slots with Sourcemod and SteamBan plugin?
One L4D2 with SM?

the cpu is probably too weak for that...

Naa i think it will be able to make it, now that srcds is multithreaded, it will utilize both cores. Smile

On-topic:
24 players in 2.2ghz.. This is something at a very limit, it might work out but you will have to push server to it's limits and any extra plugin/setting will cost a lot.

Offtopic:

First of all he wants to run 2 servers on 2 cores both 24 players, loadbalancing won't benefit by getting 1 server execute on 2 cores and 2nd server on 0. Though it might work if 1 is empty or almost empty. But ... this will only work if srcds is truly well threaded.

Getting good scalability in using multiple cores is an art, I can give you lots of material about it. After spending few years modding srcds engine I can clearly say that those guys are simple would be unable to make SRCDS well threaded. Thank you for replying in detail. Yes I agree SRCDS have many issues etc etc, I guess the best way for me is to stay with what I got now.

The servers will never be at the peak load at the same time (almost never), i did not say that i would dedicate 2 cores to the first server, it would just be no problem most of the time. Let me give an example:

Server 1 have all 24 players, most of them are dead so the load is not that high and theres actually a lot of processor power available, as most peaks are only happening when all 24 players are alive and active. Server 2 is having almost near-peak load and borrows some of Server 1's power. Simple.

Both servers could get to be at the peak load time at the same time, but this rarely happens. Linux switches the processes between the cores pretty fast, so i guess there wouldnt actually be a problem.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. if two 24 slot servers take almost 100% of each core, the third server will horrible lag even if most players are dead then.

simply try it out. if it works, you are fine. if not, you can take it offline again.
