High ping on servers
#1
Hi!
I just registred to get help with a problem Im having.
Im running a VPS with a pretty fast internet connection.
---
RAM: 1024 MB
Processor: Unknown
Bandwidth: 1.95 TB
---
I downloaded this file: http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test with 27mb/s so the download speed is really fast.

My problem is that when Im hosting any kind of Source server, everyone's ping is above 150. I don´t understand the reason for this, any help?

Most VPS' experience higher than normal CPU latency due to their virtual environment. This is generally unnoticed with most applications that aren't CPU dependent in which VPS' work great for. Game servers are not one of these applications and thus you experience an increased latency on your game servers.

So it is because of the CPU?

It's a VPS. You're not going to get the best CPU latency on any VPS as you would a dedicated server.

The CPU on your VPS might be an ungodly powerful 16 core Intel prototype but you still share it with many other people. Thus latency.
Looking for a game server? Visit fullfrag.com and pick one up as low as $2.50 / mo!

There is no way to improve the latency on my current VPS then?

Eh, in some cases it's worse, and some it's better. It depends on the VPS provider, what OS they are using, and the configuration of their machines.

Your issue may also be related to the geographic location of the VPS. If you purchased a VPS in Europe and everybody is from the US then you will also have similar symptoms that may not be related to the VPS' CPU.

Anyway, don't host a game server on a VPS.

What Loopyman there said. If you don't pay for much, you don't get much. VPS is good for basic websites, not good for real-time applications like game servers.

It's probably not bandwidth. It's probably CPU and other IO blocking.

You need a dedicated CPU core. Ask your provider how much it would cost for a dedicated core VPS or higher priority. Some places will help you out, but most won't. You just need to pay for a dedicated server.

In summary, don't host a srcds game on a virtual private server, unless you know what you are doing (you clearly don't).
