New Server Questions

I am planning on setting up a new server for TF2 this weekend, and I was wondering if anyone has any advice.

My main questions are:

1. Which linux distro should I use? (I was planning on using Ubuntu server)

2. Which mods should I install? The last time I ran a server was in 2004. Back then I was running AMXX and HLGUARD w/ Steambans. I would like to run something similar to that setup.

3. What capacity will my server be able to handle? (I was hoping to be able to run a single 32 slot TF2 server)

My specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3700
2GB ram

I suggest Debian or Ubuntu server. And run SteamBans with SourceBans + zBlock for a secure server. And eh.. I wouldn't suggest running a 32 slot server on that. High slotcounts require a lot of hardware to get stable. Remember to put "fps_max 66.67" in your server.cfg.

I guess I will have to play around with the number of slots. What would be your estimate for a stable server size?

Use an amd64/x64 Ubuntu install. Look for a control wrapper script around here somewhere, or just do it on the command line yourself per instructions laying around on this forum.

A current TF2 server will take up something like 500MB of RAM, so you are good there, but your CPU could be too slow for a 24-slot server. You might have to turn it down to 18 player, or something like that. The oldest CPU that I use is an AMD x2 4600+, and one core gets up to 80% when full.

Use "net_graph 4" on your client console and watch the server "sv", which is server FPS. The max per default is 300. If it dips down below 70 and floats around there, then your CPU is probably maxed out.

To watch your stats live, use the "nload" and "htop" tools. "htop -d 1" will give you high-resolution info.

Currently using Ubuntu server, works great. If that's what your comfortable with, do it.

Along with those two previously mentioned mods, if you're looking for admin control, SM Mod is pretty nice. Of course there is Mani mod, but I haven't messed with Mani's in a while.
