Run whatever you are more familiar with, granted they are very similar, but they all will get the job done just as well as any other.

in fact, I would recommend some 64 bit debian (ubuntu or debian does not make much difference, but centos takes more effort to make it working well for our needs), and I strongly advice against running gameservers inside a VPS!

they dont offer a 64bit template =((( ....
yep running a gameserver on a VPS is rly stupid but hey,

Price/m: 8,90€
FPS: 166
tickrate stable 20.3
ping 25-38
crash problems: nope

running a l4d2 8slot 2xtf2 24slot under full load

and the second fact: I cant afford 44€/m for a dedicated server. (student)

I was looking for a cheap dedi server for max 25€ but only found single core 2.2ghz that is no enough

Why don't you rent game servers? They are much cheaper. You could then build up a player base and a community, receiving donations to cover server costs, then expand into a dedicated server. Exactly what I have done and I'm a student.

Because not all communities get donations. I've been trying for the last two years to get some sort of donations, either by tempting with reserved slots e.g all the other things other clans use, but no luck. Fortunantly applying for a sponsorship fixed the whole issue.

it is probably very much out of the question to run even a single 24 slot tf2 server on a 9 EUR vps.

this is quite simple: more or less the cost of a vps is only cheaper because you get less power. for web applications etc. a vps can offer more power than a equal expensive dedicated server, because it only needs power in short time intervals (and in between other vpses on the hardware can use power), so in theory you only need to pay for the average load, not for the peak load. but game servers have a very steady load, so that concept has no advantages (in fact disadvantages). it is much more efficient to go for shared hosting (i.e. rent a game server) instead of a vps, so that must be also cheaper.

changing the os does not do any miracles, those kind of optimizations only help, if you have enough power in theory. you don't, probably by far.
