Yet another "How many servers/slots" thread
#1
BASIC INFO
Server OS: Windows Server 2008 64-bit
Processor: Intel Xeon X3430 Quad Core 2.4GHz, 4mb cache
Ram: 8GB DDR3
Game(s): Team Fortress 2, Modern Warfare 2, Homefront

Admin Mods: SourceMod/MetaMod
Connection: 100 Mbps dedicated port, 1000GB Bandwidth cap

How many servers, slots, etc could this hold?

It can probably hold 1 32 slotter each core. I don't know. BUT i see one thing, that bandwidth thing aint going to hold for very long. My tf2 servers (24 slotters x2) uses about a tera a month.

Edit: MW2? He's going to run into deep shit if he tries to host one of them and sell it.

Your not going to be able to host anything as a GSP with a 1TB cap. A full 24 slot server we'll say is full 24/7 will take about 1.5TB a bandwidth per month so that will basically take out all your available bandwidth. And yes Michael is right each core can basically only handle a 32 slot server, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less but its a ball park figure. But basically the higher the CPU GHz the better your going to be (unless its old CPU technology).

GSP's have little to no profit margin unless you actually own the servers your hosting and have them colocated, take it from me.

^ Agreed on the money aspect. As well as the bandwidth, play it as it goes. I highly doubt anyone signing up with your gsp, will have a server full 24/7. Just keep an eye on the bw usage.

My Orange_x3 server is almost full 24/7. The only times its empty is maybe two hours during the night. I've almost exceeded my bandwidth "allowance" for this month. Sucks tbh.. And why the hell is he planning to host MW2 servers? AlterIWNet? As i previously said, he isn't going to "live long" with his buisness if he's going to host them.

^ Didn't ask you if your server was full 24/7. When he is first starting out, I doubt he will have anyone with a full serer 24/7. But as stated, he should closely watch it to keep away from overages. But in reality, it's ideal to get more bw, atleast 3000gb.

I was just explaining how it was going with it and how much i use a month.

Well actually you can never rely on the theoretical calculations. Your calculations are done if the server are filled 24/7 which i doubt it would be. Im also starting this kind of business myself and i would also have to calculate my power usage, as im not renting stupid boxes, but got my own hardware.

When you are calculating power & bandwidth you should know the word peak. Your server will probably only be working every day from 18 to 24, the rest of the time it will stay idle and this will result in no bandwidth usage and very low power usage.

I did not mention anything about CPU usage, so how was I wrong? I just mentioned about the bandwidth not being enough.
