CSS Server running way to fast.
#1
Installed a CS:S server and was able to get it up and running. However, the game speed is about 20x faster than it should be. The mission timer also count downs much faster then necessary.

I have checked around but could not find a fix. Can anyone help me?

Here is a copy of my server.cfg file:

Code:
hostname "CENSORED"

// rcon passsword
rcon_password "CENSORED"

// Server password
server_password
// server cvars
mp_friendlyfire 1
mp_footsteps 1
mp_autoteambalance 1
mp_autokick 0
mp_flashlight 0
mp_tkpunish 1
mp_forcecamera 0
sv_alltalk 1
sv_pausable 0
sv_cheats 0
sv_consistency 1
sv_allowupload 1
sv_allowdownload 1
sv_maxspeed 320
mp_limitteams 2
mp_hostagepenalty 5
sv_voiceenable 1
mp_allowspectators 1
mp_timelimit 30
mp_chattime 10
sv_timeout 65
host_timescale 1
phys_timescale 1

// round specific cvars
mp_freezetime 3
mp_roundtime 5
mp_startmoney 16000
mp_c4timer 30
mp_fraglimit 0
mp_maxrounds 0
mp_winlimit 0
mp_playerid 0
mp_spawnprotectiontime 5

// bandwidth rates/settings
sv_minrate 0
sv_maxrate 0
decalfrequency 10
sv_maxupdaterate 60
sv_minupdaterate 10
host_framerate 10

// server logging
log on
sv_logbans 1
sv_logecho 1
sv_logfile 1
sv_log_onefile 0

// operation
sv_lan 0
sv_region 0

// execute ban files
exec banned_user.cfg
exec banned_ip.cfg

Any ideas how to slow things down?

Thanks in advance,

I'm not a very handy Linux guy but did you modify any of your clock timers maybe trying to boost your fps?

Set host_framerate to 0

Isn't that setting for demos?

Changed it to 0 and it still runs at at high speed.

Any other ideas?

Delete the phys_timescale thing

Edit: @centralfrag, i don't know. its got something to do with the framerate or something lol

Hey all,

I have the same problem here and i tried to put the phys_timescale at 0 and still the same.

Thanks in advance for your helpness Smile

I think your config is pretty weird. Use the valve default config and only change the server name and rcon passwords and try again. If that works, only change settings you absolutely understand. there is no need to play around with stuff like phys_timescale, host_framerate etc.

ps: yes, people use host_framerate on their client to convert demos into a series of images

Ok, so I tried just deleting the server.cfg file and restarting the server -no effect.

Other symptoms:
LAAAAAG - even when connecting on the same LAN as the server, the server spikes from 5-200 ping.

Connection Issues - connection is lost, and sometimes connection cannot be established.

Any thoughts? Is the fact I am running the server on a 32 bit machine causing problems? My machine is stock, with no overclocking.

what are the machine specs (post output of "cat /proc/cpuinfo")? did you do any modifications to the Linux system? and did you try a complete fresh installation of srcds without any modification (don't change even a single config setting etc.)?

Tried a complete wipe and reinstall. No effect. Ping is still very high and server runs very fast. Also connection drops are common.

The only way this could happen is if the backend to gettimeofday() (wallclock) is running too fast. Might be buggy hardware. I've seen broken HPET counters report odd operating frequencies, causing gtod to update way faster than it should.

is this a laptop? do you have some kind of cpu frequency scaling enabled? cpuinfo says your cpu has 1.66Ghz but runs with 1GHz only. that could be the reason for some problems of this kind, so make sure you have any kind of frequency scaling disabled.

you can also try different clock sources.
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource
will list you all available clock sources, and e.g.
Code:
echo hpet >  /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource
will set the clock source to hpet. replace hpet with all sources the first command prints out and try if one of them is better. but do not use jiffies!

In any case, you cpu is very slow and might not be capable of running a game server with a satisfying quality. Probably only very few slots will run lag free.

Quote:~$ cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource
hpet acpi_pm

Quote:~$ cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource
hpet

It is a laptop, a latitude d520.

I have not played with cpu frequency scaling before. I have ubuntu server loaded. Can anyone point me to some relevant literature to see if my clock speed is normal?

http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/cpu-freq/user-guide.txt

set the governor to performance and you should be fine, i.e.
Code:
echo performance > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
and to see if it was successfull:
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
you will need to do this for all cpus (replace "cpu0" with everthing which is there in that directory)
