How many slots?

Damn there has been a lot of these questions lately. . . Are you playing on the same computer as you are hosting? And to play it safe, I would say 20 slots max. Than again, depends on the mods you want to run.

You're right dualcore. I was already thinking about a sticky or a faq for that kind of question. Maybe a small list of server's with their mods and settings and the max-bandwidth they use.

I mean you could probably fit 40 slots on that upload link but you wouldn't be doing anything else other than hosting those slots.

my srcds in DODS full with 32 players uses about 5 Mbps of my upload speed. i would not recommend 40 slots at all. it's either high slots with low sv_maxrate (15000) and lag or low slots with high sv_maxrate (40000) and no lag. first reply is about right, i'd say dont go more than 14-16 though because you don't want to completely max out your uplink. set sv_maxrate to 40000 with 16 players and you should be fine
edit: heard you're running a dual core. you most likely can't support more than 16 to begin with if you're going to run more than just srcds on that macine
Thanks for all the replys much apreciated.
First, no i am not using the same machine to play and host. Second, the reason i asked is that i am struggling to host 10 slots as pings rocket. Also on that hosting machine theres only one css server and a ts3 server 100 slots , that only at peek times has 15 peoplel on.The only mods on that server is zblock , nothing else. Machine is a Quad Core Q6600 with 4GB ram @ 300FPS Here`s my server.cfg: // server name hostname "Lan Arena #1 - http://www.pt-frag.com" //Fast Downloads sv_downloadurl "http://www.pt-frag.com/cssdownloads/" // server cvars mp_friendlyfire 0 mp_footsteps 1 mp_autoteambalance 1 mp_autokick 0 mp_flashlight 0 mp_tkpunish 1 mp_forcecamera 0 sv_alltalk 0 sv_pausable 0 sv_cheats 0 sv_consistency 1 sv_allowupload 1 sv_allowdownload 1 sv_maxspeed 320 mp_limitteams 2 mp_hostagepenalty 5 sv_voiceenable 1 mp_allowspectators 1 mp_timelimit 0 mp_chattime 10 sv_timeout 65 // round specific cvars mp_freezetime 0 mp_timelimit 0 mp_roundtime 5 mp_startmoney 800 mp_c4timer 45 mp_fraglimit 0 mp_maxrounds 0 mp_winlimit 0 mp_playerid 0 mp_spawnprotectiontime 5 // bandwidth rates/settings sv_minrate 10000 sv_maxrate 40000 decalfrequency 10 sv_maxupdaterate 66 sv_minupdaterate 33 // server logging log off sv_logbans 0 sv_logecho 1 sv_logfile 1 sv_log_onefile 0 // operation sv_lan 0 sv_region 3 // execute ban files exec banned_user.cfg exec banned_ip.cfg Any help welcome! Thanks in advance.

A single source server will almost always use up a single core when the players start coming in. Reduce tick rate to 66 or 44 and shut the other servers off. You don't want 100 tick rate unless the server is under 50% cpu usage (one whole core on a dual core) at all times.

Hi, since when running 1 css server and a teamspeak 3 server is too much for a Q6000 with 4 GB ram?
I think problem is with connection , cause the CPU it is not! Tickrate is @ 66

Is there a sticky we can read about server rates, bandwith and player slots etc...So we don't have to ask this question anymore? I used the search function but this thread came up the most accurate for me.
Years ago there was a guy whisper I think? Who had a wiki on this subject.Does that wiki still hold water with the new Orange box engine?
