Need help with Rates for my servers.
#1
Hello everyone!
I need some help with the rates on my servers. I have multiple servers. I have 5 servers up. 3 CSS Servers and 2 TF2 Servers. Every server have 32 slots availble for players and I know that if all the servers have 32 players playing at the same time, my computer cant handle it. But there have never been more that 19 persons total on my servers so I dont think thats going to be a problem.
So, now lets continiue to the connection information. In my home I have 24 Mbit/sec down and 1 Mbit/sec up. I have three computers that is working 24/7 in my home. One is my laptop (which I play on and doing facebook and other stuffs like that) The second is my database (The one I have my servers on. Intel® Pentium® D CPU 2.80 GHz processor and 2GB RAM-Memory.) The last one is my brothers computer which he uses to play on. (CSS, WoW, CoD MW2, HoN, etc) and when I have about 16 - 19 players on my server it starts lagging for him and me while we play on a diffrent server or game than the ones I've hosted.

So, I need alot of help with those rates to get it to NOT lag for us nor the players. Otherwise my brother starts plug out the connection cable between my database and the router. Because he's an über geek Sad

The rates I have right now is listed below (I only use rates on my TF2 servers because I dont know if the rates the same for both CSS & TF2)

Quote:sv_maxcmdrate 34
sv_mincmdrate 22
sv_maxrate 25000
sv_minrate 13000
sv_maxupdaterate 34
sv_minupdaterate 22

Thanks in Advance!

So wait wait ... your trying to host 5 32 slot servers on a 1 Mbit/sec upload?

If that's so then I'm surprised you even got 19 people on that upload speed. My TF2 server alone with like 20 people is about 1.5Mbit/sec upload. If this is your case then changing rates will do nothing for you ... You would need to either get a dedicated server / rent the servers from a provider / get a faster upload speeds.

Yeah I know. I'm going to upgrade to 3 Mbit / sec upload but I still need those rates for my servers.

Quote:// Rate Settings //
// Min bandwidth rate allowed on server, 0 == unlimited
sv_minrate 0
// Max bandwidth rate allowed on server, 0 == unlimited
sv_maxrate 50000
// Minimum updates per second that the server will allow
sv_minupdaterate 33
// Maximum updates per second that the server will allow
sv_maxupdaterate 66
The settings will be the same between the games. Your settings will work, and will probably be best for your situation considering you do not have all that much upload.

Again I mean even with 3Mbit/sec upload you'll maybe at the most be able to host 2 full servers at 32 slots and that would be absolutely killing your connection where you will not be able to do anything on your Internet connection other than host those two servers.

So, I've thought about another way. I might do this way ;

I have 3 servers with 18 players maximum on each server and I order a 3 Mbit / sec upload connection. Will me & my brother still be able to use the connection then?

It would be pushing it if so, home connections are not really built to be hosting servers. I really don't see you hosting much more than 2 18 slot servers, especially if your trying to do other stuff as well on the connection.

Unless you get a fiber line that offers 10Mbit / 25Mbit etc which will work, but still not the same reliability and routing that a data-center has.

First of all. Don't try to run any public servers with over 11 slots with a max rate of under 25k. Your minupdate/maxcmdrates should be synced for best performance.

Since the engine is 66tick, set those commands to 66. Do you want performance? Or lowering the metrics in terms of bandwidth.

This is gaming, people want the best of the best.

I have a fiber line at home with 24 Mbit / sec download and 1 Mbit / sec upload.

You can have a high upload speed all day long, upload is what you need.

1 TF2-server with 20slots is even enough for a 3MBit/s-upload connection if you plan on using your connection for other stuff while the server is running. In this case running QoS should be self-explanatory as well.

Correct, but hes wanting to host 3 18 slot servers now, not just one server.

I thought the "even that is too much" statement of mine pointed out that I understand the current situation.

if you have a fibre line.. why 1 Mbit/s upload? I think you have a ADSL (DSL) line whit that speed.

woah there, i'm running 25 up here. one 32 slot server that i run uses 5mb when maxed out. with 3mb up youll only be able to support approximately a single 20 slot server
