Server lag + config for rates
#1
Hi,

1st question:
I've been running a 24 slot TF2 server on the following hardware (see bottom of post) and it has been running smooth pre-uber update. But now, everything is lagging and the box haven't been changed in any way since the update. It seems like srcds needs more cpu power to keep up or something like that. Are there anything i can do to reduce the lag? This box is hosted on a 1Gbit line, not a problem.
Running a 2.6.33.5-zen3-ub-100hz kernel from ulrich-block.de. 2 GB ram and server is using 500 mb of that atm. Should i run with alot higher fps (like 500+) to make sure that it doesn't drop under the tickrate or is that a waste of resources?

2st question:
At home i've got a 5mbit upload connection, which rates should i use to get the best hitreg on that? Also, how many players can i host without any lag? I don't care if it isnt supposed to run servers on the line because of high pings to other isp's.

A 20 slot TF2 server will take about 1.5Mbit/s to 1.7Mbit/s total bandwidth (give or take) out of a datacenter. Not quite sure what it would be like for a home Internet connection. Using these rates:

// Rate Settings //
sv_minrate 0
sv_maxrate 50000
sv_minupdaterate 33
sv_maxupdaterate 66

So potentially you could maybe run two servers if all your home connection was doing was hosting these games, although with normal browsing / downloading / etc you'd be surprised how much of a hit you take if you get near your upload limit.

As for your spikes maybe an addon is doing it? Calculating stats maybe? Maybe try running a fresh server and see if it does it?

The only addons installed is SourceMod and MetaMod, no other plugins in them. Only the default ones shipped with the installation. Also, those rates.. Are those for the general srcds or specific game like css, tf2? The line is only used for a cs:s warserver, not anything else.

Thats just a generic default install, nothing special about that server or its rates.

Bumping this up for help on the fps issue.

did you try anything else but replacing the kernel? see my signature for a howto. also your current kernel is already rather old again...

Aha.. Well, i do run an idler on one core, did the priority things + set it to realtime priority.

Edit: Mind linking me to a good kernel which your tutorial works on?
Edit2: I took the 2.6.36 kernel. Seems to be good, it is compiling atm.

Edit3: fuck it, crashed the box,

edit4: Uhm.. Got a tech to swap it back to the default kernel, it's producing real stable fps, not optimized in any way except of the realtime scheduling scripts which i found at the fragaholics wiki..
