Dead Thread Rules
#1
Whilst I understand the decision to close an old thread, it seems counter-intuitive to most other forum rules I'm familiar with. Especially the prime directive of Posting And You, namely:
Quote:It is always better to post in an existing thread than to start a new one.
So what, exactly, is the cut-off time for a thread to be considered too old to allow additional posts?

We here at SRCDS.com prefer new threads for several reasons:
1. SRCDS is constantly changing - Answers and issues from even 3 months ago can be completely different or no longer existent.
2. We are a support forum - One person posts a question and everyone tried to help find an answer. If you are posting in an old thread, while you may have similar issues, your situation is probably different.
3.People come and go - There is no point answering a question for a year ago because the person probably doesn't care at this point.

Also, we are a HUGE forum with posts from 2005 and later. If everyone just responded to the same threads, we would have 20 threads that were all over 10,000 posts... and what's the point in that?

So we don't like mega threads?

I agree with Mooga in all 3 points. Even if people might think a problem is similar to another, it yet will be completely different in the majority of the cases. And people who think they need to post their (feigned) great solution to a 2-year old problem probably honestly believe they would help somebody with it. But usually they don't, because nobody who has the problem will ever read this, on the other hand we (the people who answer the questions here) need to read it and notice that it's an old thread. That only takes time.

But the question is, how can we prevent this? I've seen people raising old threads with their first post - I am pretty sure they never read the forum rules...

Prune threads to an archive, auto lock old threads. I dunno.
