Kernel best option ?
#1
Hi.I own a dedicated servers with 24 gb DDRAM3 and 2 CPU's with 4 cores each:
Quote:vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 44
model name : Intel® Xeon® CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
stepping : 2
cpu MHz : 2401.000
cache size : 12288 KB
physical id : 1
siblings : 8
core id : 10
cpu cores : 4
apicid : 53
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 11
wp : yes
Until now i used CentOS 5.5 with standard kernel witch i think has 1000 Hz,no Tickless System (Dynamic Ticks) and a lot of bad/old optimisations.
Using HTOP and hosting HLDS based servers (pb 2 and sys_ticrate 300) i get high cpu load (70-80 % on all cores).
I will make a backup and install DEBIAN x64 and i want to recompile the kernel with ZEN patch. So,witch option for smaller CPU usage should i use ?

In my opinion, stay away from RT kernels; They do nothing but suck massive amount of CPU time. That includes Zen stuff.

Option 1 is better. The kernel HZ only consume CPU and are not needed for stable fps. Also you should run the server with FPS equal its tickrate (i.e. 66 for CS:S -> use fps_max 70).
