Trying to set up ded server through router
#1
So, I'm new to the forum. I'm just trying to get a dedicated server running on my home PC. I'm not very technically inclined, so I can't for the life of me figure it out. I'm convinced its a router issue, and I'm almost to the point of going out and buying a new router and hoping its easier on that router, heh. Any help you can give me is much appreciated.

The issue I'm having is that I can't find the server in the list and when I try to connect to it through the console directly typing in the ip it doesn't connect. "failed to connect after 4 retries."

I'll just copy paste the noobie thread here:

BASIC INFO
Server OS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64 bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33Ghz
Ram: 8 GB
Game(s): Counter Strike: Source
Start Up Command: Not using a command, using the steam CS:S Dedicated Server Tool (Problem?)
Admin Mods: I am running Mani Admin Mod and MetaMod

INSTALLING INFO
Full Install Command: install the server? Again, I'm a noob.

NETWORK AND BANDWIDTH INFO(This is only needed if you are having a slot-count, bandwidth, or connection issue.)
Bandwidth: Up - 2 Mbps Down - 13 Mbps
Router: MGR614v7 and it is connected wirelessly, but I've tried it connected through ethernet cable, too. Why is wireless bad? I can run ethernet, but only want this server for me and my friends to play on.
Local IP of Server: 192.168.1.10
External IP: 69.138.148.111
Port Forwarding Screen Shot:

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

Ok so it turns out I had all my ports forwarded correctly, or i assume so, in my router setup, but I had TCP forwarded in my firewall settings instead of UDP. So, now it connects and says "Steam Validation Rejected"

So I'm off to the googlewebz to try to remedy this problem, but I'm open to suggestions.

[edit]

Ok, so apparently my ports are not forwarded properly. You see my screen capture above for the router, for Windows firewall I went into the settings and Exceptions tab. Created one for 27015 TCP and UDP, but still no dice.

Anyway, I went to http://www.canyouseeme.org and it give me this:

Error: I could not see your service on 69.138.148.111 on port (27015)
Reason: Connection timed out

Sad any advice?

What ip did you connect with when it said failed after 4 retries?

I tried internal and external IP. Connecting from another computer within the same network.

I tried:

69.138.148.111
69.138.148.111:27015
192.168.1.10

I'm trying to figure out why it can't see my ports when I'm 90% sure I forwarded them correctly. Would my ISP have anything to do with it? (Comcast)

This is very frustrating.

Do you have a firewall on the server? If so allow SRCDS to access the internet.

On the computer itself? Yes, Windows Firewall.

I have allowed an exception for the programs Source.exe and srcds.exe, and I have allowed an exception for port 27015 UDP and TCP as well. Still no dice.

[edit] I just tried it with the firewall turned off, and it still didn't work, so I'm assuming that's not the problem and am left with the router or some issue with the networking of the server PC itself. It shows up in LAN Games, but not Internet Games, and I cannot connect to it directly or by clicking on it in LAN Games.

Still getting "Steam Validation Rejected" Sad

Also, I should add that today, I'm trying to connect to it from the same PC as the srcds is running on for diagnostic purposes, because I don't have another computer here with me today. I read online that this is possible, is it?
Now for some reason I am getting the following from canyouseeme.org:

Error: I could not see your service on 69.138.148.111 on port (27015)
Reason: Connection refused

Connection refused instead of connection timed out. Any significance to that?

While dinking around in my "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" I see a setting for NetBIOS setting. It was set on Default and said "Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server. If static IP address is used or the DHCP server does not provide NetBIOS setting, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

So I tried enabling it. Does this mean anything significant?

I have been messing with these settings thinking something in here would affect it, and now don't even remember what these settings looked like before. Do these settings look alright?

Have you set both forward and DMZ? If so, disable either one of them.

Ok... I unchecked the "Default DMZ Server" box that's shown above and I still get a "Connection Refused" on canyouseeme.org

When you say both forward and DMZ, you mean that setting and port forwarding, correct? I did have them both, but have disabled the Default DMZ Server now and it still appears my port isn't open.

I read somewhere that some ISPs block port forwarding on wireless networks. Is this true, and if so, how? Is there a way around it, or is it likely my problem is something else? Earlier on in the process, I tried with a wired connection and it didn't work, but if this is true, then I will try again with the settings that I currently have set up.

My ISP is Comcast, btw.

Nope. They can however block ports from their network.
But they can't block your wireless ports.

So, in theory, if it works with the ethernet connected to the router, it should work wirelessly?

I read in another thread that you want your dedicated server running on your internal IP. When I run it, it shows the external IP. Is this wrong? And how can I remedy that?

[edit] never mind, at one point it was running on the external IP, but now it seems its back to showing the internal IP. I'm about ready to give up. It seems I just can't get my ports forwarded correctly.

[double edit] Ok, strange. I just checked on canyouseeme.org after not doing anything for like a week and when I check port 27015 it give me this:

Success: I can see your service on 68.47.250.11 on port (27015)
Your ISP is not blocking port 27015

So... it's still not working... Now what?

On my server's firewall, should I have both the srcds exemption AND port 27015 forwarded? Or should I only have an exception for srcds? Or does it matter? I feel like I've made a bit of progress with my port being forwarded correctly. I am still trying to connect from the same PC that is the server host.

Um..
Hosting a server on wireless is NOT recommended (based on my own experience).
Also, hosting a server on the same computer that you are playing on is not recommended either.

I'm not trying to play from the computer on a regular basis, merely testing it.

forward only 27015 tcp+udp port and run the server before the game otherwise the game would assign 27015 for listen server from create server menu and the ded server would take 27016 port
