Srcds uses mutch ram.

Hello,

My srcds server uses much ram, when the server is 0/16 it's using 512MB Ram
but the cpu is just fine. Is there any possibility to lower that idle usage. I tried heapsize but that didn't help.

BASIC INFO
Server OS: centos-5.5-x86
Processor: Intel® Xeon® CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
Ram: 1GB
Game(s): Counter-Strike Source

I have heard thet the Source engine servers uses a lot of RAM. My Killing Floor server uses 300-500Mb of RAM, my old CS:Source server used 1.5-2Gb with 20 players on it (also had quite the amount of mods, addons and skins, but still...), so i guss the Source engine-based servers are hungry. i think someone told me once that for a source server to run smoothly, you should have MORE than 1Gb of RAM.

I guess you could try to shave down the size of the server by removing extra textures, disabling mods, turning off server-logging(not recommended), or removing unused files. Though, i don't think this will have an impact on the RAM usage. You might wanna try using compcache to compress all data cached in RAM to increase your theoretical RAM storage space. This may have an impact on CPU performance if your CPU is weak or not multi-cored.

My server currently has a quad @ 3.2 GHz and 8Gb of RAM, so at least i know i'm in the safe Toungue

512 MB is a bit odd if you are running without plugins. My servers usually take 200-300 MB then. Maybe you have a very big map loaded?

But lowering the RAM usage will probably not make running the server better, unless you are really running out of ram and the server starts swapping.

Our servers run at 50MB empty, and 300MB full...

ulimit -s 128 or ulimit -s 256
./srcds_run -game cstrike etc

That dont show me how much it uses? Does not that limit the amount of memory for each game?

Hmm my server uses around 120mb of ram on a fresh install of CentOS 5, perhaps you have other services running?

You can type top and view the proccess list, it should be listed under srcds_run and srcds

srcds_run is just a launcher script. it's called srcds_linux on css.

OFFTOPIC , About Windows
Does running the server as windows service in windows using firedaemon Lower it's Memory Usage ?
Ex : server is hidden and can only be seen by task manager and you can't switch to it or show it's window / console
Thanks .
