Overkill?
#1
Hey,
Just wondering, I'm have a server with these specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 945 @ 3GHz CPU
ASUS M4N78-AM Motherboard
Corsair DDR2 BallistiX 4GB @ 800Mhz RAM
2x WD VelociRaptor 600GB SATA HDD's

Is this overkill for a 10 slot warserver?
I have an 800KBit upload connection, so i guess that sucks.
I posted in another forum on here (Linux SRCDS or w.e) if someone could calculate the rates, and i got a response but i'm asking questions with this:
Am i allowed to doublepost in here?
If i tweak the maxcmdrate will the lag go away (the lag is like, it doesn't lag for me, but all others see me lagging, and same with me seeing them lagging)?

You wouldn't get alot profit from that server because your internet connection is seriously way to low for a 10slots server or even a 5slot.

You can still however run a server, but you'd have to drop everything about quality, because it's going to run like shit to be honest Smile

You can justify the sv_maxrate to your needs, as where people don't have high pings. Try various rates for the best gameplay. You might experience unstability with that low connection. I'm quite confident you don't got that speed all day long, as it's probably an old techlogogy your ISP is using and it's most likely a shared pipe too. Smile

Else the hardware specs itself should easily run 8 war servers. 2 on each core. It's just your internet connection who holds you back!

Thanks for the answer!
I do have plans for it, I'm participating in alot of LAN's, and they've requested me to be their "Server Operator".
So i guess i can take it there and get people playing on it.
Also, I'm on a copper line, which sucks. Megahard.
And one more thing, if I want to host a 2v2 match on it (with current speed), would players have an insanely low hitregistering because of a low cmdrate/updaterate?

Edit: I agree on the "Run like shit" part. It sucks imo.
Its still fun playing on it, just me and my friends Smile

Edit2: Did a massive typo in the first post: "Going to order" is "installing hardware now"

Yeah, that hardware should be very nice.
I am running 3x 10slots on a 1,66GHz with 3gb of ram (5400rpm HDD), and no lag when maxing 30 slots.

However, your 800kbps speed would really be the big party-crasher as the others have mentioned.
I have the opposite problem of what you have - bad hardware on some servers, but 50/50mbit fibre Smile

you don't need two HDDs, RAIDs do not increase quality of the server. maybe it increases slightly the map change, but that's not worth the money. also a quad-core is always "overkill" for running a single game server, as only one core can be used. but if you want to be able to extend, the system is a good choice. (almost) for sure both points do not hurt!

regarding your connection speed: usually those home connections have more than one problem. speed is too low, but also the ping is high (especially if other players are connected through other providers) and the line does not run well "close" to the limit. so probably the usable speed (i.e. without strong ping variations) is much lower than 800kbps, maybe it's only 400... you can try running with low update/cmdrates (i.e. sv_maxupdaterate 33 and sv_maxcmdrate 33). if you are lucky you can play a 2v2, if not, you probably cannot improve it without changing the connection.

Your best bet would be to get it co-located some where. Although you would need to change over to a 1U type case.

Its a fine server, and as Hazz mentiones, get it co-located somewhere with a great connection. I could get it colocated for you in Denmark but i guess thats too far away from Norway. You can also check if it's possible for you to get fiber to your home.

home connections are never as good as colocated ones, even if they have the same speed etc., because home connections are not so well connection to other providers. if you want to have a really nice internet server, there is no way around colocation.
