[Resolved] Illegal instruction installing on Ubuntu Server 10
#1
Hi all. I have been searching for days now on a solution to my problem and found this forum. Sorry to dig up an old post but, I did read the original sticky post "Linux illegal instruction thread" and supposedly the linux illegal instruction issue was resolved. Well apparently it's back again.

I will give you some specs here to work off of:

Now, the OS is fresh install of Ubuntu 10 and has all the latest updates already installed. The account I am logged into is a regular user account that belongs to the root group.

Here are the steps I have taken to try to get steam installed:

1. sudo mkdir /srcds
2. cd /srcds
3. chmod 755 /srcds
4. sudo wget http://storefront.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin
5. chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin
6. ./hldsupdatetool.bin
7. ./steam

after running #7 I get an update from steam mentioning this:

Getting version 42 of Steam HLDS Update Tool
Downloading. . . . . . . . . . . .
Steam Linux Client updated, please retry the command

if I retry the command I get this following error:

Checking bootstrapper version ...
removing stale semaphore last operated on by process 20518 with name 0eBlobRegistryMutex_07692C9F0DCCAB9B49E0AA2095A1952C

Getting version 42 of Steam HLDS Update Tool
Illegal instruction

8. ./steam -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir .

after trying to continue on and run #8 i get the same error as above:

Checking bootstrapper version ...
removing stale semaphore last operated on by process 20518 with name 0eBlobRegistryMutex_07692C9F0DCCAB9B49E0AA2095A1952C

Illegal instruction

It doesn't matter what game I attempt to install I get the same error message on any of them. Is steam reverting back to the same issue of only allowing SSE2 processors to run steam? If that's the case I might have to hold off to buy a new processor, mobo, etc. which would suck.

Thank you for any assistance or help you might be able to provide.

The CPU is to old and is lacking the needed sse2 support. No workaround. Only way is to use a newer CPU.

That's what I was afraid of. After searching some more on this issue I ran into someone else that mentioned SSE2 support might be required. So I guess new hardware for me if I want to run a server. Thank you for the help.
