CSS server hosting help
#1
Hey guys, I installed a CSS server following these instructions on the latest Ubuntu server :

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=76483

And I then created + configured my server as per the bottom of this suggesting the server config creator tool :

http://counterstrikesource.mediasmok...opic.php?id=29

All fine - then i go to run my server by doing :

sudo ./srcds_run -console -game cstrike +map de_dust

and it says:

Code:
andy@novo:~/srcds/orangebox$ sudo ./srcds_run -console -game cstrike +map de_dust
Auto detecting CPU
Using default binary: ./srcds_linux
Server will auto-restart if there is a crash.
Illegal instruction
Add "-debug" to the ./srcds_run command line to generate a debug.log to help with solving this problem
Wed Dec  1 16:22:40 GMT 2010: Server restart in 10 seconds
Illegal instruction
Add "-debug" to the ./srcds_run command line to generate a debug.log to help with solving this problem
Wed Dec  1 16:22:50 GMT 2010: Server restart in 10 seconds
Illegal instruction
Add "-debug" to the ./srcds_run command line to generate a debug.log to help with solving this problem
Wed Dec  1 16:23:00 GMT 2010: Server restart in 10 seconds
Wed Dec  1 16:23:01 GMT 2010: Server Quit

In a never ending loop - i then add the -debug flag - and do sudo updatedb then locate debug.log but none has been created...

Please help,

Andy

OO i managed to get it to produce a debug.log - can be found here :

It seems this problem is entirely because I dont have sse2 instructions supported on my processor - it only has sse - any solutions?
This looks to be another episode of the sse only cpu problem - has that problem been fixed yet? Any work arounds?

afaik sse2 is now required. in any case, cpus being so old not having sse2 will not give you a good server...

another hint (not related to your problem): never ever run srcds as root, so omit the "sudo". it is a very big security risk else.

So there is no work around - an sse processor could give you a perfectly ample server for fun with your friends tbh - dont understand why people think sse2 increases performance 2 fold... I thought they released a fix?

sse2 is not used mainly for performance, but it's instructions. most gameserver crap that comes out -requires- sse/mmx support (or in this case, sse2)

sse2 instructions are faster than equivalent constructions without sse2. so yes, sse2 gives (possibly) a slightly higher performance, if correctly used. patching that out would decrease performance for all sse2 cpus, while enabling only a tiny fraction of people to run the server on their old boxes (and probably throw it away afterwards anyway because the cpu is way too slow -> not due to the lack of sse2 but due to its age!). I guess, valve doesn't even want to have the effort of maintaining two versions, so they decided to drop the support for those old cpus...

Ah dammit - well im changing the server from a :

Pentium 3 1.1ghz 512 ram to:

Pentium Celeron ® 2.2ghz 768 ram which supports sse2.

I guess that should make a large impact on performance then...

err... yeah, from impossible-slow to ultra-slow...

By the way, you need to define how many players you want on the server.
Slå den med jeres fiberforbindelser...
