If you're connected to the server that is hosted on your network you cannot have players join via that method.

You haw to give them your external IP. Click to Join will NOT work.
Gave them this IP:

ok there was some good info here- - Big Grin

1.) because i am playing on the same lan as my server my friends that are not on my lan cannot "Join on me" in the chat.

2.) My friends can join my server with the external ip this is true!!

However a few of them are not as "network savvy " as myself Sad ,
they just see me in the friends list and want to play w/ me. Then they report that they can never join my game when i am on my dedicated server.

I wish to solve their problem, and i know that there has to be a way if i can "join on my friends games" when they are on a different server from the servers list.

my server does show up on the lists of servers so this post is not to address that old problem.

Again how can i let my "friends " that i have on my friends list join my dedicated server like we can on others servers.

There has to be a way if it can be done otherwise.

Thanks again for your co-operation.

If you're lucky you can see your own external IP, which means, if you connect to that one instead of your local IP, then your freinds will be able to [Join You]. Smile

Still believe there has to be more. . . .

Have had a hard time sifting any and all sources that i can just trying
to get the server to work properly.

It is almost like the information is hidden or being hidden outright. . .

nearly like a "knowledge is power/money" kind of thing and
all info required to make things really work is being expunged.

Sort of like how a crucial bit of info or key component is left out
of McGuyver or CSI tv episodes so that people will not try things
@ home and then sue the tv station for reckless endangerment.

OR am i just being Paranoid??

Running a private dedicated server for family and friends should not be
this hard to accomplish.

So please someone be a "good Samaritan" and lend support Big Grin

There have been a few people on this web site that i have learned much from in there posts. SO I WISH TO TAKE THIS TIME TO PUBLICLY THANK
THOSE PEOPLE WHO SHARE THERE KNOWLEDGE WITH OTHERS !!!!!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS GIFT OF GOOD ADVICE AND PASSING ON
OF KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES.

Generally routers will not allow the same IP to loop back to itself for security.
If one of your friends join via your external IP, they can then invite others.
The other option would be to host your server at a data center so that you too were conecing via the external IP.

Now that is useful info.

Thank you!

I am currently running my server with a FPS of over 600,
sometimes it gets up to nearly 800 fps.

also found a good "cloud storage" server that costs about $19.00 a year
and allows unlimited xfers and no max file size or max limit storage size.
Also it is along the same "backbone" that my systems are on.

now for a side note i am currently running all the "haunted/spooky" maps that i could find until after Halloween . . . .

So i guess a Q: i have is does anyone have any "noise" if there is going to be another "holiday event" from steam or is there a cvar that would allow me to run that kind of event so my family and friends can acquire the rest of their special harvest event achievements?

Again Thanks a bunch!!

Cloud storage wont give you the ability to run a server.
And if you can run it, it wont run well at all.

You need to buy a Dedicated Server... and they are generally expensive.

Sorry for the misunderstanding . . .
The Cloud storage is for the download url and it seems to be working quite well thank you. This solved my problem with "clients" not being able to download the maps that i had on my dedicated game server.

My dedicated game server is on a "junk??" computer that is on my lan. It barely has enough horsepower to run some of the newer steam games, but has quite enough to run my server with up to 20 clients or bots.

I did all this as sort of a progression. . .

First just the "create a game " kind of local lan party gaming.

Second i went to a "Listen server" on my "junk" computer.

After i got most of the scripts/configure files worked out on the
"Listen Server" i stepped up to a Dedicated server. Now i have the ability to have my "22-30ish year old" nephews located in other states to play with their cousins and friends on Friday nights.

It has been a pleasure for me to hear the fun they all have again. As well as i get in a occasional "Frag or two" on them.

So as i have repeatedly said Thanks for all the help!

You have made my "labor of love" a continuing progress.
