How Many Servers ?
#1
Hi guys

I have just bought myself a dedicated box here are the specs

Processor 2.4Ghz Quad Core Xeon
Memory 2GB
HDD 250GB
Connectivity 100Mbit
Bandwith Unlimited
System Ubuntu 32bit

My question is, how many 24 slot counter strike source servers do you think is possible to run on this box ? Also would running multiple servers from 1 directory using sim link and different server cfg's use less CPU ?

Many thanks

SAS.

no, cpu usage is generated by the running process not by some disk content. but you can ease updates and save disk space that way, at the cost of very tight linked configurations. I have an unchanged copy of css in one directory and use links to create instances. Then I can have some files identical and others different among the servers.

btw: I would recommend running a 64 bit version of Linux. Performance is generally better.

But would that not use more CPU ?

Im currently running 4 different installs of css and in ubuntu when i type the htop command i see all cores are almost maxing out. Would running 64bit help ?

Many thanks for your reply.

read the last entry of my faq ;-) cpu usage is nothing to look at.

and why should 64 bit increase cpu usage? the kernel is better working at 64 bit and the timing is more precise.

in general you should look at the fps stability and try to optimize your system accordingly. I have written a howto for compiling your own kernel. once you have done that successfully you can experiment with different patches and configurations. In your case I would recommend the ZEN patches and a 100 HZ kernel with dynamic ticks. that saves some cpu usage. also try reducing fps to the tickrate, I have reason to believe that since the orangebox update higher fps do no longer increase quality.
