Another person trying to setup a server for the first time
#1
Ok, I posted a thread in the Anandtech forums and I was directed here, so I am hoping someone can help.

I recently resurected my old computer and installed the CS S dedicated server via Steam. The machine specs are:

AthlonXP 1800+
256mb Crucial PC2100 (soon to be 768)
ECS K7S5A
WD 120gb hdd

This machine is connected to the internet through a US Robotics 802.11G router with a 4m down/ 768 k up connection, though soon this is going to 8m/2m. I know the machine is not a beast but all I want is a server for friends and just to mess around with.

My first problem is that no one can see it outside of my lan. I assume this has to do with ports so I went into my router settings, the NAT section, and enabled this:

Trigger Port/s Trigger Type Public Port Public Type Enabled
1. 27000-27040 Both (TCP and UDP) 27015 Both

I can't figure out a way to just do port fowarding instead of triggers, so any help with that?

Assuming that this is the only port I need to forward, what else do I need to do to enable my server to be seen? I will eventually setup a cfg file but right now I just want to mess around with a few friends and a bunch of bots. Thanks for any help!

Go to portforward.com to help forward the ports on your router. Go to the post CS Server help for a noob for the exact ports to be forwarded. You wont see your server either. If you have the ports forwarded right then it'll show up for other people just not you, unless your playing on a diff. machine then the SRCDS. But go to gametiger.com to help you clue you in on whether or they're configured right. If it shows up there then its on the master list.

Thanks for the pointers. I would be playing on a different machine connected to the same router. When I was playing around last night it only showed up on the LAN list, not the internet list. I will try what you have suggested this evening (after work) and let you know if it works. Thanks!

Is sv_lan set to 0?

Do you just do this in the console settings of the server?

Ok, I followed the above instructions. As per the port forwarding site I enabled 27030-27039 on TCP and 1200,27000-27015 on UDP. I started up the server machine and typed "status" into the console and it tells me "adding master server" and an ip. I says this again with a different ip, I don't believe it showed that before.

After doing this my server is not showing up in game tiger nor can my main gaming rig see it. What else do I need to do? I have no idea about the whole sv_lan 0 thing, I typed that into the console of the server and it did not look like it did anything.

Also, what does "insecure" mean in the server status? Thanks!

all you need to forward for srcds port wise is the port of the server.. like 27015 default, and thats in tcp and udp.

man, this is still not working. I enabled a DMZ for my server computer and still no luck seeing it outside of the lan. any more ideas?

Ok, i ended up ignoring the whole port fowarding thing and setting a "DMZ" for my server port, will that work? I still can't see it outside... any ideas as to what I am screwing up?

EDIT Also, everytime I start the server now in the console it says "connection to steam servers successful" but it does not show the lines about the master lists ip anymore...

hmm.. so your checking the server from outside you lan? what is your ip, i will see if it shows up for me. if it says connection to steam servers is successful, then it should work. are you sure your searching the right ip? because you will have a lan ip, and then an external ip, the ip people have to connect to outside your lan is the externail ip, and you being inside the lan have to connect to the lan ip, go to http://www.whatsmyip.org and get your ip, it will be big accross the top, and post it here, followd by your port, and i will test it to see if it works.

or if you want, you can email me your ip at skel@thedtaclan.com
