Server breaks
#1
hi everyone.

I just installed on a fresh machine the hlds for cs 1.6.

My server is:

Intel Xeon QuadCore
8GB ddr2
1Gbps internet connection.
Centos 5.5 64bits (already tried with 32bits version and the breaks persist).

When people are playing some times the server gives a ~3secs break and then dont break for 10/15 min then break a bit again.

I realy dont know what is happening, already tried to change to rt kernel, but it still the same, so now i am using default kernel.

Heres my process's list.

i never had problems with centos making cs servers.

Do you think ubuntu make it?

Think a new kernel config can help on it?

centos has often been reported to produce an inferior quality. debian 64 bit (or derivatives as ubuntu) are probably better.

also which kernel version and patches do you use? do you run the server with elevated priority? (look at my howto)

Atm my kernel is 2.6.18-194.el5 and i dont have any patchs atm, but already tried the 2.6.26.8 + 2.6.26.8-rt16 and break too :/

And i use your script + crontab with 5 min check to put high prio on servers.

many times server break and clients see, cl_flushentitypacket.

Thanks for the help

I recommend 64 bit in combination with a recent kernel (2.6.3X). 32bit might have been better for older kernels...

what is that? i don't know that distribution...

but: the vmlinuz file is enough, if you make sure you don't need any modules at boot time. in particular this means you need to compile the SATA driver (or what ever your boot HDD is connected to) fixed into the kernel. have a look at "lspci" which hardware you have and pick the appropriate driver (in case of SATA it's in "Device Drivers" / "Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers" -> there enable "ATA SFF support" and your driver both with a [*] instead of a [M]). If you cannot find it you can also try enabling all SATA drivers. Make also sure that in "SCSI device support" the option "SCSI disk support" is enabled with a [*].

I hope you could follow me ;-)
